1 9 BLACK HAND SURPRISE WINNER — i ■ Scores Third Major Victory of Current Rockingham Meeting. ♦ High Glee Second to Flying Ebony Colt in Dartmouth Handicap — Chickahominy Makes Good. § SALEM, N. H., July 25.— Black Hand, the fleet Flying Ebony colt that races for P. F. Ratti, added the Dartmouth Handicap to his list of Rockingham triumphs. It was his third major victory of the current session, he having previously accounted for both the Roseben and Harvard Handicaps. As in his other two scores, his victory was j I achieved by a narrow margin. As in the Roseben Handicap on opening day, it was again C. V. Whitneys High Glee that followed the winner past the line while well back the Wheatley Stables Slapdash earned the show position before Flying Sailor. Zekiel was next and Universe was the last of the half dozen that performed to complete the six furlongs journey. The Dartmouth Handicap was the outstanding offering of the mid-week card and was endowed with ,500 added of which the winners share was ,900. Of those named overnight, Roustabout was withdrawn, leaving High Glee as the main reliance representing C. V. Whitney. After a delay of two minutes at the post starter Frend got the field away to a perfect start. Zekiel was first out of the stalls and showed the way. He was joined by High Glee and for the first quarter mile they raced as a team with the Flying Ebony colt in closest attendance. Slapdash was next and Flying Sailor was showing in front of Universe. There were no material changes in the running positions until there remained but a quarter mile to be run. It was then that Zekiel began to drop back. The Whitney filly drew clear straightening out in the stretch and Black Hand was now in second place. Robertson was plying hand and heel on the Whitney miss Continued on twenty-sixth page. In the final strides Lynch managed to overtake High Glee and have Black Hands head in front at the end. Slapdash moved into third place inside the last furlong and had little trouble in taking her part of the award though never in a position to threaten the first two. The sport opened with a well-backed choice going down to defeat. Flying Don succumbed in the last stride to the challenge of Ervast, losing by the scantiest of margins at the end of the six furlongs, the distance of the first race. Well back of the leading pair, Manager Bill was third. After Flying Don had disposed of II Trova-tore after going the first quarter mile, he drew clear and at the turn into the stretch was a length to the good. Ervast, never far back, was working his way up steadily and came to the outside of the leader when making his effort. Manager Bill had but one of the field headed leaving the back stretch and appeared too far back to take any share of the spoils. Flying Don was able to show the way until right at the line. Ervast had responded courageously in the drive and right at the last stride dropped his nose down in front. Manager Bill had unleashed a burst of late speed through the stretch that carried him into third place, two lengths back of the closely locked leaders. •
