; TEXAS DERBY ODDS SHIFT Roman Soldier Now Rules Warm Favorite at Short Price of 8 to 5. Whiskolo Second Choice at 3 to 1 and Whiz-zaway Is Cut From 15 to 4 to 1 Black Helen On Doubtful List. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 9. Odds on the 5,000 Texas Derby field have shifted since the victories of Roman Soldier and Whizzaway, the latter heretofore lightly regarded for classic honors. Roman Soldier now is held at the short price of 8 to 5, while Whizzaways price has been sliced from 15 to 1 to 4 to 1. With the change in the odds, the Milky Way Farms Whiskolo now is the second choice at 3 to 1. While 6 to 1 now is the price against Col, E. R-Bradleys Black Helen, due to no word being received whether she is training for the nine furlongs of April 20. Roman Soldiers price was knocked down from 5 to 1 after his impressive victory Saturday when, under 123 pounds, he won over a field of Texas Derby candidates in the fast time of 1:44, for one and one-sixteenth miles, just one-sixteenth mile short of the Derby distance. Whizzaway whirled the distance in the same time as Roman Soldier in defeating another band of Derby eligibles Monday, but he carried only 112 pounds and was under strong hand riding at the finish to beat off the challenge of the Milky Way Farms South Gallant. Roman Soldier was cantering at the finish of his victory. It is not likely that either Roman Soldier or Whizzaway will be seen in colors again until the running of the Texas Derby, but several of the other candidates probably will be given another race. Among these is Whiskolo, second to Mrs. Payne Whitneys Gillie in the Santa Anita Derby. He and South Gallant are expected to be definite starters for the race, wtiile the Milky Way Farms has another pair of eligibles in Where Away and Gallaclay. Whiskolo and South Gallant are among the thirteen thoroughbreds which are expected to be starters out of the field of forty horses nominated for the rich Texas race. Along with them will be the favored Roman Soldier, Whizzaway, Furfiber, McCarthy; winner of the Louisiana Derby, Bul-strode, Eddie J., Glittering, Prince Splendor, Back Fence, Hasty Glance and Bill Donoghue. Jack Westrope, probably will have the leg up on Whiskolo, as the Milky Way Farms has a call on his services and he rode the Continued on twentieth page. While trainer Phil Reuter has not definitely decided upon his jockey for Roman Soldier, he favors Lester Balaski. Balaski had the leg up on Roman Soldier the past Saturday and also rode the late William Sachsen-maiers Plight to victory in the 1934 Texas Derby. Paul Keester has been obtained to ride McCarthy. He was up on the colt when he won the Louisiana Derby, beating Dark Woman and Bulstrode, also in the Texas field. The Odessa Farm has the call on Hilton Dabson for Eddie J., while K. Knott or B. Fels will have the leg up on Whizzaway. Knott has ridden Whizzaway in his past three victories.
