TANFORAN INAUGURAL TODAY Made-Over California Track to Be Scene of 2 5 -Day Meeting. , Plant in Fairly Good Condition, Only Track Itself Being Trifle Doubtful Real Test for San Francisco Sport. SAN BRUNO, Calif., April 19. The made over Tanforan Park track will be the scene of a twenty-five day meeting beginning Saturday with a program of eight races. Although the fields are small, due to the reluctance of many owners to take a chance with their horses on the new strip, enough are entered to assure interesting racing. It was found necessary to cancel the original ,500 Inaugural Handicap because several of the horses that had been nominated Thursday were not entered Friday morning, and a mile race for an 00 purse was substituted. It is a Grade C Handicap and in the field are Sea Cliff, Sand Baby, Impeach, Piety, Little Son and Mumsie. , The track will be in fairly good condition for- the. first days racing. An additional crew was put to work on the strip Thursday and track superintendent Frank Rinehart of Bay Meadows loaned a hand to whip the course into shape. The only real bad spot on the course seems to be at the sixteenth post in the stretch, and the track crew were concentrating on that Friday afternoon. As far as the grandstand, clubhouse and mutuel departments are concerned, everything will be in readiness. The pari-muttfel crew and totalizator operators had rehearsals Thursday and Friday and functioned perfectly. Walter Marty, in charge of the mutuel department, expressed himself as perfectly satisfied with the set-up. The clubhouse is the most changed part of the plant. Two additions, one to house the clubhouse mutuel department and the other a cocktail room, have been added to the main building, while the cocktail bar is the longest of that on any coast track. Due. to the rush of work which has been taking place to complete the track on schedule, little work has been done on the infield, but that space will be beautified for the fall meeting. The majority of the jockeys that performed at Bay Meadows have made application, for riding licenses, and George W. Schilling, presiding steward, was passing on them. It is likely that but few will be refused, but the boys will be warned that any infraction of the rules of racing on their part will draw a stiff suspension. The Tanforan meeting will just about determine whether or not the San Francisco public will pay to witness their racing. Admission charges of for grandstand and .50 for clubhouse have been announced. Seven races will be given on week days and eight races on Saturdays, with post time for the first race being 2 p. m. J. F. Patterson, president of the Western Thoroughbred Horsemens Association, was circulating a petition Wednesday which will request the management of various California tracks to put on two races on each eight-race program for California-bred horses exclusively. All California horsemen and breeders were expected to sign. At present one race for Califorhia-breds is held each, day. A number of horses worked out over the Tanforan track again Friday morning and some showed good speed. The track, which was in fairly good condition Friday, should be at least 25 per cent better for the running of the initial program.
