Thirteen three-year-olds, which include two fillies and three geldings, were named this morning for the mile and a furlong journey that features the closing day of the most brilliant meeting held at magnificent Arlington Downs since racing was revived in the Lone Star State. All of the leading eligibles will be under colors and several were entered this morning which are considered doubtful starters. The Derby, which had its inception at the 1933 fall meeting, the first held at the Waggoner course since the sport was legalized in this state, carries 5,000 in added money, and in the event the thirteen, which is hardly likely, go post-ward, the race will gross 18,250. This includes the supplementary nomination payments of 75 each for McCarthy and Back Fence and each must pay 5 more than the starting fee of 50 if they fill their engagements. McCarthy, Louisiana Derby winner, under the Morrison and Keating colors, is classified as a certain starter, while Back Fence will carry the Six Bar Stable silks only in the event of a muddy track. Thomas C. Wor-dens Prince Splendor and Hope Eternal and William Hinphys Dark Woman are others that are on the doubtful list. With none of the field being big money winners this or I last year, the colts and geldings will carry 120 pounds each, and Hope Eternal and Dark Woman will tote 115 pounds each. Despite threatening weather, which- followed light showers during the early morning hours, the forecast is for fair weather for the closing days program. In that event a crowd estimated at 25,000 is expected to witness the eight-race card. A lavish program of events will be sandwiched before and after each of the eight races. Mid-day will find hundreds of the social elite from the southwest enjoying luncheon in the clubhouse dining rooms, terraces, and mezzanine promenade, reservations for which topped all previous figures. Still maintaining his leadership over the other three-year-olds, Elwood Sachsenmaier and Phil Reuters Roman Soldier was the first of the eligibles entered. The other entries came along steadily, and the field was assembled long before the time for closing the race. With a brilliant record behind him, which includes stakes victories at Hialeah and a triumph in his only essay under colors here, Continued on fifteenth page. TEXAS DERBY OF 5,000 AT ARLINGTON DOWNS Continued from first page. Roman Soldier will go to the post a strong favorite. The Cohort colt will be attempting to make it a double for trainer Reuter, and the Sachsenmaier family, for Plight carried the colors of the late William Sachsenmaier to victory in the 1934 renewal. He will have the services of Lester Balaski, who was astride Plight when he led Hickory Lad and Riskulus to the finish of the nine furlongs last year. Whizzaway, like Roman Soldier a hope of an eastern sportsman, is not without his backers, and the Whiskaway colt had been a strong second choice. Entering Arlington Downs competition with a string of victories, only halted when he was disqualified for a foul during the New Orleans season, Whizzaway added two triumphs here to his imposing record, and those fans who have followed him through Fair Grounds and Oaklawn Park meetings firmly believe the W. T. Payne colorbearer will carry that owners Geneseo Stable colors to victory. Kempton Knott, who has been handling the horse, will direct him tomorrow. Although at the start of the meeting the Milky Way Farms Stables Whiskolo and Col. W. A. Jones Furfiber were considered the pair Roman Soldier must turn back, their efforts here have not greatly impressed the local patrons, and only those fans who followed he pair through their California and Florida campaigns remain loyal. They will have the services of two of the leading riders of the country. George Woolf, whose star fades at times only to again shine more brightly than all others, will handle Whiskolo,. and Wayne Wright, now in a tie for leading American riding honors, directed Furfiber through his final preparation this morning. South Gallant was named as a running mate for Whiskolo, but trainer Robert McGarvey has not definitely decided whether both will be under colors. Of the others entered, McCarthy appears the leader of the lot. With the exception of his first race here, a sprint affair, McCarthy has been right with the leaders. He finished second to Whizzaway and Roman Soldier in his last two starts and has been training in the best style. Charles Landolt, one of the veteran riders was engaged Wednesday to replace Paul Keester as his rider. Unlucky in Arlington Downs competition, .Eddie J. appears an unknown quantity. He opposed the leading eligibles here, but in two essays was the victim of bad luck. The services of Hilton Dabson had been secured for him. After a good race, Wise Player, which will carry Miss A. Morgans Texas owned colors, performed dismally in the Arlington Handicap Wednesday. He began slowest of his field and trailed through out An improving eligible, Cross Ruff is another that displays stake form at times. After a victory here, he came back to be well boaten by Whizzaway. Fernando Fernandez, a Cuban apprentice, will ride him. After a wonderful race against older horses, Back Fence was added to the list through the supplementary procedure but B. B. Rice stated today that he would -fill his engagement only in the event of a muddy track Due to his effort being at a sprint distance, Prince Splendor is not given any consideration. Hope Eternal was under colors in a mile affair against more seasoned performers but her effort was not one that would command attention. To take care of the extra time needed between races, post time for the first event is set for 2:00 oclock. The Derby will be run as the fifth face and should be called to the post at 4:30 oclock.
