Jeffords, which is one of the choices in the Kentucky Derby future books, will make his three-year-old debut when he carries the bulk of public support to the post in the sixteenth running of the Chesapeake Stakes, the ,500 added, mile and a sixteenth feature of a .powerful week-end program at the Harford County course tomorrow afternoon. Indications point to Commonwealth as a 2 to 1 choice in the field of thirteen, which In- - eludes seven eligibles for the Kentucky Derby. Twenty thousand fans are expected to throng this picturesque racing grounds on the banks of the limpid Susquehanna, to cheer for Mrs. Jeffords gelding is the hope of all Marylanders for the gold and glory of the venerable Blue Grass special. Trainer Preston Burch brings Commonwealth to his first start of. the season with confidence. The son of Bostonian has wintered superbly and has done everything asked of him in his spring preliminaries. The gelding wound up his preparation yesterday with a smashing mile in :48, 1:16, 1:43 and galloped out an additional furlong in 1:57. He pulled up with his ears pricked and cooled out satisfactorily. MUCH IMPROVED COLT. "He is a much better horse than he was last fall when he won the Endurance Handicap and other Maryland races very satisfactorily," said Burch today. "I am confident that he will prove that the high regard held for him in the Derby future has not been misplaced. However, no matter what he does in the Chesapeake, he will be shipped to Kentucky barring racing accidents." Commonwealths chief opponent in the Chesapeake is considered to be Plat Eye, the fast ugly duckling from the stable of Mrs. Payne Whitney. The Chicle colt shipped in excellent condition from Belmont Park the other day, following a corking mile final of 1:39 75, over the New York course. Two other redoubtable invaders from the Metropolitan sector are on the grounds, Young Native and Vain Bachelor, from Mrs. Dodge Sloanes Brookmeade Stable. Trainer Bob Smith arrived with this pair yesterday and reported a New York final of a mile in 1:43 handily, at Belmont Park. The Brookmeade entry lines up as the third choice in the field. BLOODROOT SHOWS SPEED. E. R. Bradleys Bloodroot showed a speed final of three-eighths in :36, handily and Mrs. Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Fairplay reeled off a half in :48 this morning. Breckenridge Longs Legume went a mile in 1:43, handily, Thursday. The Derby eligibles in the Chesapeake field are Commonwealth, Plat Eye, Young Native, Tutticurio, Cold Shoulder and Sun Fairplay. Charlie Kurtsinger, who has the mount on Demonstration tomorrow is the only jockey in the race to win the Kentucky Derby, taking it with Greentrees Twenty Grand.
