5,000 CHALLENGE CUP Detroit to Offer American Public One of Greatest Races of Year. Cavalcade, Discovery, Azucar and Probably Omaha May Be Among the Starters on June 29. DETROIT, Mich., May 20. With the Detroit Derby, which is to be run June 15, closed, and having drawn the cream of the three-yeai-olds of the United States and Canada, the Detroit Racing Association has now turned its attention to the Detroit Challenge Cup, 5,000 added, at weight-forage, over a mile and three-sixteenths, which closes Monday, June 17, and will be contested June 29. A weight-for-age race in June with the amount of money added that is being offered at Detroit is a daring and sporting venture, but when it is also considered that only those four-year-olds and over that have won 0,000 or more in all monies and three-year-olds that have won 0,000 or more, it becomes one of the most intriguing sporting propositions in the history of the American turf. The event was planned at a social gathering between A. G. Vanderbilt, Fred Alger, Jr., and Mrs. Sloane, where all of them agreed to run their crack horses, Discovery, Azucar and Cavalcade, if at the time of the race they were in racing condition and, with this guarantee of starters, the Detroit Racing Association felt encouraged to go on with the classic event. When Cavalcade goes to the post June 29 he will return to the scene of his greatest triumph, the Detroit Derby of last year, when, overcoming almost insurmountable obstacles, he established himself as the outstanding Derby horse of the year. AZUCAR ON GROUNDS. Azucar, which is on the ground already, will be given special preparation for the race. This horse must always remain in the history of American racing as one of its most remarkable products. It has never been known in the history of our racing that any individual horse would be a top horse both through the field and on the flat, but this is Azucars distinction. Discovery needs no introduction, his record-breaking performances of last year having established him as one of the great horses now before the public. The association has other tentative pledges for the race. Tommy Taylor has promised to give Head Play a special preparation, and this erratic performer, if he happens to be right at his best on the day of the race, might be in somebodys way. When judge Murphy was jat Arlington Downs, L. T. Whitehill told him that he had never had a horse show such improvement as Gusto had in the last two months, and that he expected to give him special preparations for the Detroit race. Those who remember Gustos brilliant performance in the American Derby and Classic of last year are willing to believe that if he can be brought to top form in the astute hands of Mr. Whitehill he will, particularly if the track shoud be muddy, be a potential factor ,h the determination of the race. ROMAN SOLDIER CERTAIN. Roman Soldier has also worked himself right up into the magic circle of 0,000 winnings and Phil Reuter has promised him as a sure starter. Omaha is the real question mark in the race. Under the weight alignment, he will carry only 114 pounds to 126 on Cavalcade, and if James Fitzsimmons should elect to start him he will carry the hopes of many a race-goer. Just how much wear and tear Omaha can stand will be determined as he trains on, but if he comes out of the American Derby in good shape, and with the Classic at Chicago three weeks away from the Challenge Cup, it might be that the horse will be sent for the rich prize. In addition to the above, there is Ladys-man and others which might develop before the closing time, June 17, so that the promise of a spectacular race is bright.
