I FOREIGN TURF NOTES Mesa, the French-bred and owned winner of the English One Thousand Guineas, is the Spanish word for table. The sire of Mesa is the Irish St. Leger winner Kircub-bin, which was at the head of the stallion list in France in 1930. The Sandringham Stud, from which came such noted winners as Persimmon and Diamond Jubilee, was established in 1887. The Epsom Derby will be run this year on June 5, the Epsom Oaks on June 7, and the Coronation Cup on June 6. Joe Childs, the English jockey who rode the American champion Reigh Count to victory in the Coronation Cup of 1929, is fifty-one years old and is still one of the foremost riders in the world. He has ridden the winners of fifteen classic races, including the Two Thousand Guineas twice, the One Thousand Guineas twice, the Derby three times, the Oaks four times and the St. Leger four times. He also has ridden classic winners in France and Germany. One of the first and best horses bred by King George is Friar Marcus; which is still living though 30 years of age. He has been a pronounced success in the stud with winners of over 300 races and nearly 00,000 in prizes. Gordon Richards was much in the limelight at Hurst Park Saturday, May 4, when he rewarded his many followers by riding three winners. Royalist, at 10 to 1, Ur-sarena at 9 to 2, and Whataday at 10 to 1. A record number of claims, fifteen in all, were put in for El Mirador after the latter finished second to Zelica in the Denston Claiming and Selling Plate at Newmarket May 3. Lord Derbys Flamenco again failed as a favorite when he finished unplaced in the Victoria Cup at Hurst Park Saturday, May 4, the winner turning up in Precious Pearl, quoted at 10 to 1. The One Thousand Guineas winner, Messa, which is leased by M. Pierre Wertheimer of Epinard fame, will be kept in England to start in the Epsom Oaks. She is described as "a lazy filly but a rare stayer." Damascus completed a spring handicap triple for George Lambton when winning the Chester Cup on May 8. The noted trainer previously had furnished Apple Peel to win the Queens Prize and Precious Pearl the Victoria Cup. The Irish-bred and owned His Reverence won the Great Cheshire Handicap at Ches- ter May 9, showing decided improvement over his performance in the City and Suburban. The aptly named Traffic Light made a successful first appearance in the colors of her owner and breeder, Lord Astor, in the Princess Royal Stakes at Kempton Park Monday, May 6. Traffic Light is a brown filly by Solario Point Duty, by Grand Parade.
