BAD WEATHER AT DETROIT Most Disagreeable Conditions of Current Meeting Prevail Form Well Observed Despite Adverse Track TrackConditions Conditions Nell Barton Among AmongDays Days Winners DETROIT Mich June 18 The most dis ¬ agreeable weather of the meeting prevailed for the sport at Detroit this afternoon A cold rain that fell the greater part of the day kept away all but the regulars and they were forced to seek points of shelter during the afternoon By far the smallest crowd to have viewed racing since it was revived here two years ago attended but despite the muddy footing and the incle ¬ ment weather form players enjoyed a ban ¬ ner afternoon With adverse track condi ¬ tions prevailing only those performers that favor such a racing strip were under colors and the best race was an allowance affair for members of the claiming ranks ranksThis This sprint at six furlongs halted the fa ¬ vorites winning streak when Wild Pigeon failed to find a place among the leading trio G T Williams furnished the winner in Slapped which reached the finish a neck before W Elliotts Miss Careful Third went to the Six Bar Stables Back Fence with Wild Pigeon Capitalist and Silverette completing the sprint in the order named namedThe The race provided the first spirited finish of the afternoon After sprinting into a clear lead in the opening quarter Miss Care ¬ ful was put to a strong drive when Back Fence moved up on the outside of her to take the lead near the stretch However she proved the gamest of the pair and again taking command in the stretch ap ¬ peared to be the winner D Summers brought Slapped to the outside for the drive and catching the leaders in rapid fashion forged to the front near the end Once in command he drew away steadily from the faltering Miss Careful CarefulAllowed Allowed to lost ground during the run down the back stretch Wild Pigeon was sent to the inside for the drive but he was unable to menace the leaders leadersWhile While Capitalist showed nothing after propping at the start Silverette was never a factor factorShowing Showing improvement over his other two efforts and a preference for the muddy strip Night Play carried the colors of the Bomar Stable to an easy and extremely pop ¬ ular triumph at the end of the fivefurlong dash that opened the program Second went to Sun Asia with Hennessey third Eddie Legere had the Chance Play colt in the van soon after the start and after sprinting into a long lead he was placed under strong restraint The finish found him three and a half lengths before Sun Asia which led Hennessey by a length and a half for second With the exception of Mottled which tired after showing a flash of speed and Lexy which reached third position turning for home the others of the field of ten maiden juveniles showed nothing The winner was a 4 to 5 choice choiceAnother Another son of Chance Play and an odds on choice was successful when Mrs Sam Orrs Drombo was an easy winner of the second race Hasty Belle was second and Lanier third Drombo drew away from his field steadily to reach the finish seven lengths before Hasty Belle which got up to lead the tiring Lanier by a length for second The leading trio dominated the pace through ¬ out with Lanier weakening after forcing the pace to the last sixteenth sixteenthForm Form players selected their third winner when Mrs B Reeds Nell Barton experi ¬ enced little trouble in leading My Surprise Maple Dream a fielder and eight others to the finish of the third race raceRacing Racing Vignolas Bud into submission dur ¬ ing the first fivesixteenths Nell Barton which had the services of Lee Hardy drew away steadily to be seven lengths before My Surprise at the end A strong factor from the start Maple Dream tired in the last stages Big Torch which was making his first start unseated C Turk at the start but the lad escaped uninjured uninjuredMorris Morris R scored his second straight vic ¬ tory and provided the first real surprise of the afternoon when he led Bright Melody Dorothy Dale and five others to the finish of the fifth race raceTaking Taking command soon after the start Morris R made every post a winning one to be two lengths before Bright Melody at the end Five lengths separated the latter and Dorothy Dale when the finish was reached Bright Melody was a 5 to 2 choice Seymour which came in for good support was done after fiveeighths fiveeighthsS S S Friedlein Cuban sportsman furn ¬ ished his first winner of the meeting when Shawnee led the wellbacked Social Climber Mt Hood and eight others to the finish of the sixth race Taking command soon after the start the winner showed the way until near the final quarter where Social Climber forged to the front However the favorite was unequal to the task and she gave way steadily during the run Ihrough the stretch Mt Hood worked his way forward to be much the best of the others when the finish was reached
