ARIEL CUSS AND WORKMAN Prove Successful Combination in Belle Harbor Handicap Skill and Vigorous Finish of Whitney Rider RiderPlays Plays Important Part in Bostvvick BostvvickVictory Victory at New York NEW YORK N Y June 18 George H Pete Bostwicks Ariel Cross under a smart ride by Sonny Workman took lib ¬ erties with one of Jack Campbells handi ¬ caps at Aqueduct when shouldering 113 pounds just two and a half more than the handicap required was winner of the Eelle Harbor Handicap a six and a half furlong handicap for those of class B Workman was an important factor when he stole away with the son of Ariel in the early stages and gave him magnificent support when he began to tire in the stretch At the heels of the Bostwick sprinter George W Ogles Patchpocket took second place and Buckley M Byers Thorson saved third from Some ¬ body bodyWeather Weather conditions were the most dis ¬ agreeable of the meeting with a sudden drop in temperature and a cold rain falling most of the afternoon The rain really improved the footing and in this Belle Harbor Handi ¬ cap through the sloppy going that pre ¬ vailed Ariel Cross ran the six and a half furlongs in 113 113Patchpocket Patchpocket was more alert than the others leaving the stalls but Workman was right after him with Ariel Cross and before the turn from the back stretch was reached he had taken the lead with the Bostwick sprinter He sent him right along until he Iwas tliree lengths clear where he steadied him slightly and making a close turn into the stretch he still enjoyed that advantage advantagePatchpocket Patchpocket was holding to second place and Thorson racing third but he was well back of the Ogle gelding The others trailed along too far back to be seriously con ¬ sidered sideredA A furlong out it seemed that Patchpocket would run Ariel Cross down He had closed on the leader but Workman was alive to i the danger and he roused his mount Then through the final furlong with hands and heels he kept his mount going to be win ¬ ner by a length Thorson in the meantime was coming with a belated rush on the outside but Patchpocket had saved second place by a neck neckThe The opening dash a fivefurlong dash for plater juveniles was run through a driving rain but some rains make the Aqueduct footing fast and it was run in 59 with Mrs William Garths Miss Bam winner in a drive over J D Norris Two Edged while Mrs L H Nimkoffs Ina Dear beat Jair for third thirdThe The Webb Carter Steeplechase over the short course was under selling conditions and resulted in a comparatively easy score lor JO JCj JLaiuun jr s JTOVIIHJII rxuycii viiu viiuJ J P Jones Capstan racing to the place and William Buttons Rocktor third San Miguel was fourth and Caniento last of the band The only other starter Grey Phantom un seated Hayhurst at the sixth fence when in a contending position positionDanise Danise M from the Orienta Stable and sent to the post by Pat Knebelkamp came back with another good race in the Mari ¬ gold a fivefurlong dash confined to the juvenile fillies when she was winner by a comfortable margin Curtis Kings Glory Greenock took second place with Marshall Field IIs Sea Cradle beating Gilt for third thirdThere There was considerable delay at the post for which the Vanderbilt pair Gilt and Parade Girl was chiefly the blame As they left ib was Glory Greenock that was show ¬ ing the way but not for long when Rainey rushed Danise M out and she was soon splashing along lengths before her company Before the elbow of the course was reached she had lost ground by going wide but she had speed enough to offset that handi ¬ cap and ridden out smartly she was winner by two lengths
