I . , . v ! THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936 j . HOLLYROOD, Bay Colt by High Cloud Mandy Hamilton; Property Hal Price Headley and Second Choice in Future Books for iof Kentucky Derby; Training Well at Belmont Park. See Kentucky Derby Book for Past Performances. j By NORRIS ROYDEN. . - - ---j Hal Price Headley, breeder and owner of- a considerable number of high-class horses, has been wanting to win the Kentucky Derby for a number of years, but he has only had a few starters in the race and none that were able to finish in the money. This spring he has a real candidate in the shape of Hollyrood, which was the favorite in the Derby futures until Brevity came along with his record-equalling performance in the Florida Derby. Even though Brevity is the choice, Hollyrood is being quoted at odds that usually are short enough to depict the favorite at this stage of the proceedings. Hollyrood must have established an excellent record to warrant such a position and he has one advantage over Brevity, if it can be called that, in the Derby calculations. He has proven himself as a capable soft-track horse, whereas, the Widener flash has yet to show his wares over an off course. Hollyrood was very close to being the best of a scrambled bunch of two-year-olds last season, even though he scored in only five of his sixteen starts. But he improved as he went along and concluded his campaign with a brilliant victory in the Pimlico Futurity, which, at a mile and a sixteenth, stamped him as a coming stayer. The race was also over a dull track and more often than not Churchill Downs is not fast for the Derby running. The Headley colt is a son of High Cloud and Mandy Hamilton, by John o Gaunt, and it is practically certain that his ability to run over a distance of ground is a quality inherited from his dam, which previously had sent two other high class horses to the races in Supremus and Handy Mandy. Supremus, a son of Ultimus, ran one of the fastest six-furlong races on record, but he also defeated good company at a mile and a quarter. Handy Mandy, a maiden until winning the Latonia Oaks, holds the American record of 2:28 for a mile and a half, made in winning the Latonia Derby. So Hollyrood gets his distance-running ability naturally, even though his sire has been mostly concerned with sprinters. High Cloud is a son of Ultimus, from a daughter of Ben Brush, which was a half-sister to the dam of High Time. While the Headley colt displayed good speed on occasions last year, he was a colt that responded willingly to placing and this quality should stand him in good stead in the long races in which he will be engaged this season. He developed gradually, although the season was half over before he settled down to serious campaigning. After winning two overnight events Hollyrood entered stakes competition by accounting for the Maplewood Handicap at Rockingham Park September 16, when he stepped six furlongs in 1:11 to defeat Grog, Infidox, Memory Book and other good juveniles. Moving to Belmont Park, Hollyrood was a starter in the Champagne Stakes, but he was outrun all the way in his first appearance over the straight course, Brevity being the winner by a slight margin over Snark, with Granville third. Five days later the Headley representative raced six furlongs in 1:11 straightaway in taking the Nursery Handicap, defeating Banister by a neck, while Maeriel was second and Indian Broom third. He carried only 110 pounds. His record hardly rated him as a serious contender in the Belmont Futurity, but Hollyrood was at tops for the richest and most important of the nations two-year-old stakes and he put up a courageous and remarkable performance to finish second to Tintagel, beaten a scant length. He carried equal weights with Tintagel of 122 pounds and finished ahead of Jean Bart, Snark, Red, Rain, Delphinium, Coldstream, Ned Reigh and other first grade youngsters. The next engagement for Hollyrood was in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs, the track being sloppy for the mile event. Close to the pace all the way, he finished second two and a half lengths back of Grand Slam, being unable to hold the latter as he staged a stout rush through the stretch. Hollyrood reversed the decision on Grand Slam in the Pimlico Futurity, the next engagement for both. Well rated in the early running, the son of High Cloud advanced steadily around the turn and engaged Grand Slam at the stretch turn. The latter carried him well out in the track, but Hollyrood shook him off and went on to win by more than a length. Ned Reigh, Delphinium and Snark were among the other good colts behind him at the end of the mile and one-sixteenth battle. That performance brought Hollyroods two-year-old campaign to a brilliant close and gave him a high standing in his division. He wintered well at his owners Kentucky farm and is now going through his paces in satisfactory fashion at Belmont Park. Hollyrood figures to go far in three-year-old racing.
