WINGFIELD VETERAN STARTER Hawthornes New Official Patient With Juveniles Started Fields During Tropical Meeting. The longest minutes at any race track are those when the field is in the starting gate and some unruly performer is holding up the start. To eliminate as many long and delayed starts as possible, the Hawthorne race track has signed George R. "Buddy" Wingfield to get the fields away at the coming thirty-one day meeting. President Albert Sabath, of the Chicago Business Mens Racing Association, announced recently that Wingfield had accepted. One of the veteran starters in the business and considered by many to get the fields off in the fastest time, Wingfield has long been associated with the New Orleans and Aurora tracks. His fine record last year earned him the starters job at the Tropical Park meeting in Florida and he has served there until last week. This will mark his first appearance at the Hawthorne track. Wingfield will be here with his crew of assistant starters well before the Hawthorne meeting opens on May 23. Most of the stables that have already applied for stalls at the west side track are well fortified with juveniles for the baby races, and Wingfields men will have plenty of schooling to do mornings to get the youngsters ready for competition. The Hawthorne Juvenile Handicap will be run the third Saturday of the meeting, June 6, for a ,000 added purse. Over the five furlongs route, which the two-year-olds will be sent, the start is most important and a bad one can practically eliminate the unlucky ones. Wingfield has earned a reputation for being able to handle nervous youngsters, one of the hardest tasks of any starter. ;
