i BREVITY ARRIVES AT I CHURCHILL DOWNS ! WITHOUT MISHAP I -- - - - .--A LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 8. Brevity, hailed by some as another "wonder horse" the first since Man o War and current public choice for the sixty-second Kentucky Derby, is at Churchill Downs where that famous race will be staged on May 2. Completing a fast trip from Hialeah Park, Miami, the slashing three-year-old star of Joseph E. Wideners stable arrived at the local Derby course shortly after nine oclock this morning. He and eight others, including Dnieper, owned by Mrs. P. A. B. Widener and also nominated for the prized Kentucky Classic, traveled from Florida under the personal attention of trainer Pete Coyne. All came through the trip in satisfactory fashion and, stepping from the car in the crisp morning air, several of them including the Derby favorite gave visible evidence that they were feeling mighty good. Within a few minutes after their arrival at the unloading chute, about a quarter of a mile from the Downs, they were on their way to the Widener barn at the track. Their unloading was witnessed by a number of eager horsemen, and quite a few not connected with the turf but interested in getting a glimpse of the Widener colt. After seeing that his charges were safely quartered in their stalls trainer Coyne said the consignment shipped without incident and he obligingly permitted photographers to "shoot" the star of his stable. As a precaution, all of the horses and especially Brevity were given thorough examinations and all were found to be well. Accompanying Brevity and Dnieper were Chance Sun, Shot Up and five two-year-olds, a string which later is to be augmented by eighteen or twenty others now in training at Wideners Elmendorf Farm near Lexington. Incidentally Chance Sun was the early favorite for last years running of the Derby although he failed to come up to early predictions made for him. After failing to find his best form in several pre-Derby tests at the local course he was withdrawn from the classic and returned to the Widener farm. Taken up the past winter, he was included in the draft of Widener horses sent to Miami and trainer Coyne reports him training well. Coyne said that there would be no let-up in Brevitys training and that the colts regular program of Derby work would be resumed without delay in as much as he shipped well. Dnieper too, will be kept at his regular work, Coyne asserted. Brevity, which in winning the Florida Derby at Hialeah Park equalled the worlds record of 1:48, previously set by Discovery, for a mile and a furlong, probably will be on the track tomorrow for his first exercise here. He is not expected to be asked to attempt any serious work before Saturday. Coyne said that Wayne Wright, the stables ace rider, had gone to California from Florida to ride A. A. Baronis Top Row in the Marchbank Handicap at Tanforan Saturday, and will report to him here immediately afterwards.
