THE FIGHTER WORKS MILE First Ambitious Trial for Milky Way-Farms Stable Candidate for the Kentucky Derby. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 8 The Fighter, main reliance of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars Milky Way Farms for Texas and Kentucky honors, and winner of two stakes here, had his first ambitious trial for the Derby this morning when he went a mile in 1:42. His victories, the Inaugural Handicap, and the Blue Bonnet Handicap, were at the Waggoner course distance and six furlongs respectively. Accompanied by South Gallant and under good hand riding throughout, the son of Bull Dog, which probably will be under colors in the Taylor Purse, Saturdays sub-feature, was timed the opening quarter in :24, the half mile in :49, the five-eighths in 1:02, and the three-quarters in 1:15. It was also work day for He Did, Santa Anita Derby winner under the colors of Mrs. Silas B. Mason and although the colt went along at a fast pace during the opening half-mile, he was tiring at the end of the mile, which he ran in 1:40. After running the quarter in :24 and the half -mile in :48, He Did was joined by Valevictorian and they were timed the three-quarters in 1:12, and the seven-eighths in 1:26. Although trainer Robert McGarvey has not fully decided to send The Fighter after the Taylor Purse, he expects to have a representative in the race. Sangreal and Doran, also eligible for the Derby, probably will accept for the mile and seventy yards journey if The Fighter is saved for his more important engagement. In the event The Fighter goes postward, the Taylor Purse will have an important bearing on the Derby. Rushaway, Holl Image, Lolschen, Bereit, Highomar, Way-aloft, Palm Island, and others are expected to be among the starting field.
