jHere and Therej on the Turf j j Top Row Due to Win Again I Has Small Field to Beat j J Brevity First Star at Downs . Becomes Louisvilles Choice j Top Row should speed the recovery of Albert Baroni, his owner who recently suffered a fractured vertebrae in an automobile accident, in winning the 0,000 March-bank Handicap Saturday, closing feature of the most successful meeting Tanforan has offered since racing came back to California. Of course, the mile and a furlong event has yet to be run, but the hard running son of Peanuts and Too High appears to have the small field likely to oppose him, at his mercy. Following his successful effort in the Santa Anita Handicap, the five-year-old has been taking it easy because he suffered a cut on his hind leg in that engagement and because he has had nothing very important since that injury has healed. Top Row has. been in good hands during the incapacitation of his owner and trainer and has been brought up gradually to his engagement tomorrow. As should be well known by now, Top Row runs well when fresh. Azucar, Thursday and Indian Broom appear Top Rows most likely opponents in the Marchbank and at the weights he figures to hold them safe. Azucar has never been the same since he went lame last summer although he still is capable of putting-out a good effort from time to time, but hardly good enough to hold the Baroni star if he runs his race. Thursday is another aging campaigner that probably has seen his best days, while Indian Broom is a fleet three-year-old that may find the distance too far for him. Until he met with a mishap, Special Agent appeared the principal rival of Top Row in the Tanforan event but seemingly the son of Peanuts will not have the Sir Gallahad III., four-year-old to worry about tomorrow. More so than ever because of Baronis injury, Top Row can be expected to remain in California until after the running of the 0,000 handicap on the Bay Meadows program. By that time Baroni may be able to travel and accompany Top Row to Belmont Park. Louisville hasnt had any outstanding Derby candidates of its own to talk about all winter and spring until Wednesday when Brevity arrived from Hialeah Park to complete his preparation for the May 2 classic on the scene. Because he is the first of the more prominent hopefuls, being the future book choice at the moment, to reach Churchill Downs, Louisville undoubtedly will claim him as their own, despite what Florida and Philadelphia has to say in the matter. The $ on of Sickle and Ormonda equalled a worlds record in winning the Florida Derby so naturally the natives have accepted him as their own. Brevity just happens to be owned by a Philadelphian, Joseph E. Wide-ner. But Louisville has some sort of a claim too in addition to the fact that Osmands half brother got there ahead of the other stars. His trainer Peter Coyne is a resident of that city and saddled the winner of the 1906 running, George J. Longs Sir Huon. As befitting the occasion, a large crowd was on hand when Brevity arrived and was led to his stall in the barn built for the Widener horses several years ago. As he will have a day or two to get over his train ride and then Brevity will take up in his speed work where he left off at Hialeah Park. Ever since he accounted for the Florida Derby, Brevity has been kept several workouts away from peak form so Coyne does not anticipate any trouble in getting his protege up to the proper pitch. Not unlikely the son of Sickle will be called upon for a competitive effort during the week at Churchill Downs leading up to the Derby. Brevity will have but a few days in which he will be the whole show at the Downs because Coldstream is due to arrive there Monday and a week later the participants in the Texas Derby will be showing up. During Derby week, of course, the eastern crowd of candidates will converge on Louisville. The shift in racing dates on the Chicago circuit caused the Hawthorne management to cast around for some new officials and they have been successful in engaging "Buddy" Wingfield to do the starting. Wingfield is rapidly making a name for himself and impressed eastern experts with his work at Tropical Park during the winter. Engagement of Eddie Arcaro to ride Tintagel in the Paumonok Handicap and Wood Memorial Stakes at Jamaica and the Kentucky Derby if Calumet Farm hasnt a starter indicates that George Odom is satisfied with the manner in which the Futurity winner has been training at Columbia. Arrival of Tintagel as well as Bold Venture and the Brook-meade Stable three-year-olds at Belmont Park soon will be followed within a few days by workouts that should show the status of these colts in relation to early engagements. Sponsors of the photographic finishing device used at Santa Anita Park believe their apparatus is far superior to anything else, yet they say the Waite camera is an improvement on the placing judges.
