BELIEVER OF IN-BREEDING Robert J. Kleeberg Arranges to Mate Man o War and Latters Granddaughter Intrepid Breeder. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 9. Robert J. Kleeberg, Jr., of King Ranch, Kingsville, Texas, who has done well in breeding cattle and horses for ranch work and who entertains the belief that his methods if applied to thoroughbreds, will result equally as well, has arranged to breed to Man o War one of his granddaughters. Kleeberg came to Lexington yesterday and in company with his former schoolmate, J. Howard Rouse of Midway, Ky., went to Faraway Farm and inspected the four-year-old bay filly Last Boat, by Sir Gallahad III. Taps, by Man o War. This morning he bought Last Boat from manager Harry B. Scott, after the latter had conferred by telephone with Samuel L Riddle and booked her to Man o War. It is a part of the agreement that Last Boat is to remain at Faraway Farm until after she foals in 1937. Kleeberg is an intrepid breeder. He came to Kentucky last May looking for mares by Chicle, and during the summer bought a couple of them, announcing his intention to breed them this season to Chicaro, a son of Chicle, which he bought from his friend John W. Dial, of Goliad, Texas. He was shown a handsome colt running at the side of Sunset Gun, a daughter of Man o War, at Elsmeade Farm last May. He admired the foal, and when told that it was by Peter Hastings, and therefore in-bred to Hastings, like Mata Hari is, he was wild about the youngster. At the Schwartz dispersal sale at Saratoga in August he bought the mare and foal and sent them to King Ranch. Prior to the appearance of Mata Hari, who was the result of a mating controlled by circumstances rather than by design, it was not considered good business to in-breed to Hastings, the sire of Fair Play, sire of Man o War, but now one may fine a dozen or more yearlings on Kentucky farms bred that way, and perhaps there will be double that number of similar foals this season.
