VICTORY FOR H.H. CROSS ♦ Tranquillity Farm Stable Wins First Purse at Louisville. » - Dixiana Stable Silks Prominent With Double Triumph — Track Sloppy for Afternoons Sport. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 30.— Songmaker, fashionably-bred three-year-old Royal Minstrel gelding, scored the first victory of the meeting for H. H. Cross Chicago-owned Tranquillity Stable when he turned back seven others of his age that met over seven furlongs in the Shady Brook Farm Purse, fifth and principal attraction of a program in which short races predominated at Churchill Downs this afternoon. Mrs. Emil Denemarks Flavor was second, with Caliban, from the Milky Way Farms Stable, third. Miss Prudence, which attempted to make a triple score for Dixiana, tired after leading her opponents to the stretch. Left in a sloppy condition from an all-night rain, the track dried out from the strong sun and it was classified as muddy for the running of the feature. With early Derby visitors arriving hourly, the crowd rivaled that of opening day and, despite threatening weather, was several thousands larger than that of yesterday. There was a short delay before the start and the winner, which had the services of Basil James, was far out of the running, while Miss Prudence, Sky Pirate and Stop Scout were leading the field out of the back stretch. After three-eighths Sky Pirate gave way rapidly and Flavor and Jimmie Cabaniss moved into contention. Near the final furlong Jimmie Cabaniss took command, but soon succumbed to Flavor, which was no match for Songmaker. The latter raced on the outside to be a length and a half before him at the end. Some three lengths separated Flavor and Caliban, the latter being sent through the field during the run through the stretch. After relinquishing the lead Jimmie Cabaniss tired steadily, but was much the best of the others. Songmaker enjoyed favoritism, carried 106 pounds and ran the distance in 1:28. Brilliant Light, owned by Mrs. Emil Dene-mark and having C. Kurtsinger in the saddle, raced to victory in the opening race, which tested only six of the cheaper three-year-olds, at one mile. He led from the outset and, after threatening to register by a half dozen lengths, tired, but Kurtsinger kept him going well enough to reach the wire about two lengths before Asyouwere. Third money went to Bohemian Lass. The winner was the public choice. Crows Flight, brown gelded son of High Time, from Dixiana stable, made a fine impression in his first trip to the post when he came in the stretch from far back to Continued on twenty-sixth page. VICTORY FOR H. H.CROSS Continued from first page. prove an easy winner over eleven other maiden two-year-olds in the second race, over four and a half furlongs. After passing five of his rivals to reach the front, the Dixiana youngster pulled away to win by about two and a half lengths over Stairs. fDark Friend finished third, with Equanimity 1 fourth. Charles Swain was astride his first winner I and French Princess chalked up her ini- ! tial triumph of the year when she made I every post a winning one in the third race. , Forewarned, the favorite, was second and . Sundad was third. The winner, a "fielder," was rushed to the , front shortly after the start and, showing fine speed all the way, was never headed. ! Midway in the stretch she drew away from her opponents and won by more than two , lengths in the silks of the racing partnership of Childs and Walker. Forewarned was closest to the winner throughout. Dixianas colors were carried to a second victory when Shootin Higlv which had won on the opening day of the meeting, came I back with another winning effort as her second public performance. She opposed seven other juveniles over four and one-half furlongs in the Highland Purse, the fourth race and, showing a liking for the slop, won easily after setting all the pace. A. Pelle-teris Reckless raced to second place, a little more than a length away from the victor and about three lengths before Tranquillity Farms Teddy Green, the former Game Boy, and winner of two races at Hialeah Park. The winner was a four to five choice in the betting. »
