I THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936 1 I * f | GOLD SEEKER, brown filly, by Messenger — Golden Fair; prop- j I erty of Foxcatcher Farms, is the only member of her sex among j the almost certain starters in the Kentucky Derby; the result, j » chiefly, because of her victory in the Chesapeake Stakes. ! i By NORRIS ROYDEN. j Improving just as a filly of her breeding could be expected to do, Gold Seeker has jumped into Kentucky Derby calculations despite her sex because of her clean-cut victory in the Chesapeake Stakes in which she defeated such promising colts as Delphinium, Grand Slam, Teufel and Postage Due. The Chesapeake, a mile and one-sixteenth event at Havre de Grace, marked Gold Seekers first stake victory and the third triumph of her career. She was unable to win in eight starts as a two-year-old but displayed improving form at Santa Anita Park, where she won two of her four engagements and finished a stout-closing third in the Santa Anita Derby. In the Havre de Grace, the first since her California invasion, the Foxcatcher Farms miss was well back in the early running but picked up the others gradually to get to the front at the final sixteenth pole. She defeated Delphinium by two lengths with Grand Slam not far away in third place. Bright Plumage, winner of the Derby Consolation at Tropical Park and third to Brevity in the Florida Derby, might have fought it out with her but for interference just as she was taking command. As a juvenile Gold Seeker displayed promise but she lacked the zip to break out of the maiden ranks. She was more herself at Santa Anita and outgamd Teddy Haslam at seven furlongs in her first start as a three-year-old. She disappointed in a mile event taken by Savernake but came back with a vastly improved effort to come from behind the pace to easily defeat such as Spur Flower, Sir Maxim and Prank. In the Santa Anita Derby, in which she picked up scale weight of 121 pounds, the daughter of Messenger lacked early speed and was more than seven lengths back of the pacemaker and winner He Did entering the stretch. However, she gained rapidly thereafter and at the wire was just a length and a half back of He Did with Valiant Fox separating them. That race was at a mile and one-sixteenth as was the Chesapeake, but the added time found Gold Seeker getting closer and closer to top form and she defeated a better field in the Havre de Grace event than she met in the Santa Anita Derby. Her performance was so impressive that William DuPont, Jr., and R. E. Handlen, her owner and trainer respectively, decided to send her after the Kentucky Derby. Regardless of what she does against the colts, the daughter of Messenger promises to be very hard to beat in her own division this year, the Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama Stakes especially appearing made to order for her. They are long races and distance running appears Gold Seekers forte. She is one of the best bred three-year-olds out this season, doubling up the blood of Fair Play and Rock Sand, the cross that made the Nursery Stud of the late August Belmont so successful. Messenger was by Fair Play from a daughter of Rock Sand, as were Man o War, My Play, Chatterton and numerous other high class horses. Gold Seekers dam is Golden Fair, a daughter of Wrack and Golding. by Flint Rock, he a son of Rock Sand. Her third dam was Golden View, a sister to Fair Play. This is staying blood throughout and it is evident in the manner in which the Foxcatcher filly has developed and the way she runs her races. She is not to be considered lightly even against the colts.
