PIMLICO TURF NOTES i _4 "Pieakness Oriole" is announced by Margaret Hayden Rorke, leading color authority, as a new summer color she has created at the invitation of the Maryland Jockey Club and the Baltimore Association of Commerce, in honor of "The Preakness," the famous racing classic to be run at the Pim-lico track, Baltimore, on May 16. The color, a light orange tone, is characteristic of the rich plumage of the Baltimore oriole, so-called because its colors, orange and black, are those of Lord Baltimores coat of arms. "Pieakness Week," which Baltimore is celebrating from May 11 to 16, culminates in the Preakness race, one of the most important stakes run in this country. It is so called after the horse which first won the stakes at the inaugural meeting at Pimlico in the autumn of 1870. This important turf event yearly attracts a smart crowd from many sectic.s of the country, including noted personalities in society and the sporting world. Because of its proximity to Washington, many officials and foreign diplomats attend the Preakness race, giving it further social prestige. A gala social event in connection with "Preakness Week" is "The Preakness Ball," which will take place in Baltimore the evening of May 15 at the Fifth Regiment Armory. Richard Howe, owner of the Howe Stable, one of the largest establishments at Pimlico, was an arrival from Aiken, S. C, to inspect Us string that is in charge of Capt. P. M. Walker. Mr. Howe will remain for the balance of the week before leaving on a business trip.
