BLUE GAUNTLET EASILY ■ One of Several Surprises on Fridays Card at Churchill Downs. ♦ Lucky Color in Spectacular Victory — Record "Daily Double" Pay-Off — Novette at Long Odds. 9 LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 8.— Another of the several surprises which prevailed at Churchill Downs this afternoon, came with the running of the Glenview Purse, fifth event and one of the triple features, when Blue Gauntlet, which had been unsuccessful in her five previous starts, was an easy winner at the end of the six and one-half furlongs. Dixiana furnished the runner-up in Miss Prudence, with the third award going to Rosedale Stables Silk Mask. Earl Porter, who was completing a double, put forth another of his good displays of horsemanship when he saved the four-year-old son of Epinard — Columbia when Miss Prudence and Silk Mask went out to show the way. Keeping the winner within striking distance of the pair, which alternated at pacemaking, Porter drove Blue Gauntlet through on the inside at the stretch turn and had him before Miss Prudence shortly after reaching the final furlong. Once in the van, Blue Gauntlet drew away steadily, and the finish found him two lengths before Miss Prudence, which led Silk Mask by a half length for second. Slightly more than a length separated Silk Mask and the fast-finishing Airforce, which got up to head Miss Greenock for fourth laurels. Ping and Albania completed the small field that engaged under allowance conditions, and they finished in the named order. Miss Greenock was the big disappointment. A strong second choice to Silk Mask, she was unable to improve her position and weakened in the last stages. Summerlike weather again prevailed for the sport, which was contested over a fast track, and it was enlivened by a record "Daily Double" pay-off with the victory of Novette, which was held at odds greater than 84 to 1. The crowd was on a par with that of yesterday. In one of the most thrilling finishes since the opening, Lucky Color, ussful Color Ser- Continued on thirtieth page. Ridden by Earl Porter, Lucky Color, which carried F. A. Griffiths colors, reached the end of the four and a half furlongs a half of a length before Alice Jean, which got up to beat the tiring Hatty by a head for second. A nose separated Hatty and Navarre for minor honors. The program opened with a popular score when Thomas C. Wordens Gypsy Flame was an easy winner over Lawyer Brigade, Burnt Trail and eight other three-year-olds at the end of a mile and a sixteenth. Far back while Lunsford, Entree, Lawyer Brigade and Cloverport were dominating the pace, the winner which was ridden by B. James, drove down on the outside of her field to take command nearing the final furlong and reached the end four and a half lengths before Lawyer Brigade. The latter, which subdued the tiring Lunsford, lasted to beat the fast-finishing Burnt Trail by a head for second. Field players came into their own in the second race for maiden two-year-olds of the plater type when Millsdale Stables Caravel was an easy winner. Second went to Dark Prince, with Stairs, a heavily backed choice, third. Ridden by Eddie Arcaro and rushed into the lead soon after the start of the four and a half furlongs dash, Caravel, a daughter of Bostonian and Squab, steadily increased her advantage to reach the finish four and a half lengths before Dark Prince. While the latter saved ground throughout, • Stairs was knocked back when in close quarters, and this probably prevented her from being closer at the end. Returning 70.20 for each straight and completing a "Daily Double that paid ,652.20, Novette carrying the colors of C. R. Thompson, Lexington sportsman and I breeder, was a driving winner of the third I race for three-year-old fillies. Sky o Blue ! was second, and Dainty Jeanne third. Good enough to overcome early interference and fortunate to find room on the inside when improving her position, Novette, which was handled by the diminutive George South drove to the front approaching the final furlong to lead Sky o Blue by a half of a length at the end. The latter, which led the pack to the final three-sixteenths, was a length before the fast-closing Dainty Jeanne, which beat Sailors Gift by a head for minor honors. Shining Hour, a heavily supported choice, gave way rapidly after | holding third position for five-eighths.
