TEMPESTUOUS GETS REVENGE ♦ Reverses Finish of Previous Race With Buck Langhorne. • Favored Legume Fails to Overcome Bad Start In Brookland Wood Purse at Pimlico. BALTIMORE, Md., May 8.— Tempestuous reversed the decision gained over him recently by Buck Langhorne, carrying the silks of Mrs. Thomas Stevenson to victory in the Brooklandy Wood Purse, principal event of this afternoons Pimlico program. Staging a strong rush through the stretch on the outside, the four-year-ld Sickle — Equinoctial gelding got up to beat Mrs. K. N. Gilpins performer by a neck. Breckenridge Longs Legume was three lengths farther back, in third place. Legume was made the favorite over the five other older horses making up the field for the mile and seventy yards event, but his chances were hampered when he began poorly and out of hand. However, he rushed up to take the lead and set the pace until well into the stretch. He then gave way to Buck Langhorne, which had been close to him all the way. Tha winner also had good speed but raced [ on the outside of the others all the way, I losing much ground. Buck Langhorne ap-; peared to have him beaten in the stretch, but in the final sixteenth Tempestuous continued to run steadily as the leader tired. Morpluck gained some ground in the final j half mile, while Brokers Tip and "Peradven-ture were never able to trouble the leaders. Maurice Peters rode Tempestuous to give him a double. The latter picked up seven pounds over the impost he carried in his previous race and ran the distance in 1:43%. Summer weather prevailed and a fair sized week-day crowd was in attendanes. The opening event proved a comedy of errors with A. C. Comptons Manager Bill, the favorite, gaining first honors by a length and a half over Clever Girl with Taunton a close third. James Milton sent the seven Maryland-bred platers off to a poor start with Taunton and Wickcliffe be-j ing the principal sufferers. Vanda Cerulea j rushed to the front as A. Shelhamer rated I Manager Bill well off the pace until the second turn where the Fair Gain five-year-old moved up on the outside to take command and stave off the bids of Clever Girl I and Taunton in the stretch. Thomas Hitchcock sent out his fourth ! steeplechase winner of the meeting in El I Dorador, which easily accounted for the sec- ! ond event. Making his first start of the j year he defeated O. M. Kaufmans Black | Feather by fifteen lengths. Mrs. L. R. Stuy- | vesants The Spy was five lengths farther away in third place while World Series was I fourth among the eight starters. The Hitch- . cock jumper went to the front when ready after the first turn of the course and set the pace while under steady restraint, drawing ! away easily during the final half mile. The i Immortal II. fell at the third fence without injury to C. Eagan while Bold Fellows right stirrup broke after the twelfth fence and , P. McGinnis was shaken up when he lost j his seat. E. K. Brysons Whiscenda had too much speed for the seven other plater juveniles in the third and taking the lead at the start, the gelding was never headed, getting to the finish a length and a quarter before Alex- ! andrine. Story Time was another half i length back as the favored Ejector, was well i back after lacking early speed. Alexandrine | tried to run down Whiscenda on the turn j but when Dabson called on his mount in i the stretch he gradually drew away. Kearsarge came to life after four disap-: pointing efforts to capture the fourth race, j a mile and seventy yards race for older ! maidens. The colt, a candidate for the I Preakness, was beaten off in his two pre-j vious starts this year but he had speed i enough to force the pace set by Badge of ; Honor, the odds-on favorite, until reaching r the stretch where he moved up under hard 1 riding from If. Peters. The latter never let up on Kearsarge and he increased his advan-, tage to five lengths as Badge of Honor beat out Rowes Crump by three lengths. Starter James Milton required eleven minutes before he dispatched the field of nine sprinting platers to a bad start in the fifth, | in which Microbe, the favorite, was the last to get into motion. Carvola turned up the winner to complete another double for the j combination of owner E. K. Bryson, trainer | H. Baker and jockey Dabson. Carvola was well back until reaching the stretch, where j he finished very fast on the outside to triumph by more than two lengths over Masked ! Gal, with Ladys Beau a length away in third 1 place.
