NEW ENGLAND OWNERS PRIZE Only Horses Property of Sportsmen From Northeastern Section Eligible for Pawtucket Special. PAWTUCKET, R. I., May 9.-Estimating that New England ownership of race horses has now reached the point where a race might be programmed exclusively for horses owned by residents hereabout, racing secre-1 tary Pat Horgan today announced the New England Owners Handicap would be run on Friday, May 15, for a purse of ,300. One of the principal conditions of the race is that the horses entered must, at the time of the race, be the property of bona fide residents of New England. The event will be the sixth race on Fridays card, for three-year-olds and upward, which have run in a claiming race since September 1, 1935. Entries will be made on Monday, May 11. Weights will be announced Wednesday and declarations by 10 a. m. Thursday. The distance will be the popular one mile and seventy yards distance. The condition of the race eliminates the Araho Stables handicap stars, Howard and New Deal, but among the many eligibles to enter horses are: Lyman A. Brusie, Miss L. C. White, Mrs. P. A. Shaw, Weston Adams, Thomas Swords, Danny Shea, Sheldon Fairbanks, Mrs. F. W. Hannon, Charles Phelan, Mrs. M. J. White, Benjamin Lister, B. N. Kane, W. A. Crawford, Mrs. D. Melanson, the Bristol Stable, Mrs L. E. Ames and numerous others. Because of the great difference in class of horses eligible and expected to enter, handi-capper Pat Horgan will naturally have to ■ exercise a very wide range in the allotment of weights. This will add a sporting zest to the event and is bound to stimulate the in- j terest of New England sportsmen in the | [ ownership angle of the game.
