airflAMe lowers time mark: Gallops Five -Eighths in :59 at Suffolk Downs. Twenty-Five Thousand Turf Fans WatcH Vanderbilt Juvenile Account for the Mayflower Stakes. - BOSTON, Mass., June 20. Eef ore a crowd 1 of 25,000 fans who had sent him to the post at 1 to 2, A. G. Vanderbilts Airflame, a dark bay son of Ariel Flamente, strengthened his claims to juvenile honors ,for the 1936 season when he romped home in the Mayflower Stakes at Suffolk. Downs today smashing the five furlongs track record by a fifth of a. second. The official timer caught him in :59, but competent private timers had him at least a fifth of a second faster. It was the most impressive effort turned in by any-horse in any age division in New England this season. The slashing colt from the Vanderbilt stable could have won by a New York cross-town block had his rider, Sammy Renick, urged him. But it was not necessary to urge Airflame this afternoon. He flashed to the front at the start and was fighting for his head all the way, drawing away despite the fact that Renick had many loops in the reins. At the end he was three lengths clear, of Maemere Farms Rockwood, which ran coupled with Maedic in the field of half a dozen. Admiral Cary T. Graysons Yodel was a length back of the runner-up, and Maedic ran fourth in the field. Talked About finished fifth and Early Settler trailed all, the way. There was never anything in the race but the winner. Before they had traveled fifty yards it was obvious he vas running too fast for his rivals, .although Talked About soon had enough and Rockwood took up the chase, but Airflame was three lengths in front, lopingr.along with easy strides and the second horse was laboring hard under Lit-zenbergers gad. As they came into the stretch it was the same story and the crowd had already begun to cheer Airflame as the winner as he galloped into the stretch. Yodel moved up at this point, but could not overhaul the second horse, though Grigsg rode hard. The winner was the best of the field and ran as if his odds should have been 1 to 10 in seven starts. He earned ,595 for owner instead of 1 to 2. The victory was his sixth Vanderbilt, who was here to see him run. The sport was decided under sunny skies and perfect track conditions, although the . day was very sultry. For the first time at the meeting the sport opened with a race at a mile and seventy yards. B. F. Listers Old Comrade, the choice, was many pounds the best in the race, romping home five lengths in front of Mrs. M. M. Morins Balapin, with A. G. Vanderbilts Black Toreador turning in an improved effort to take the third award. Windsor Farms Panther Creek led every stride of the journey in the five-furlong sec- " ond race and had enough left at the end to stall of the fast-closing Branncastle Farms Molasses Bob by a head. Two lengths back . of the battling leaders, Percy M. Pikes i Holluschickie took the third award. Scotch Boy finished fourth in the field of eighth. J. N. Croftons Miss Subway, defeated at short odds last out, made amends today when she carried the silks of J. N- Crofton to victory in the third event, at six furlongs. At the end the daughter of Nassak and Sub- : way was two lengths clear of Mrs. P. A. Shaws Paul Junior. The latter had only a neck to spare over Mrs. V. Wyses Parya Stella. The winner, which was ridden by Stafford, completed the distance in 1:13. O. L. Fosters Out Bound came to the lead in the stretch and was driving hard at the finish to beat T. S. and J. S. Mulvihills American Prince in the mile and seventy yards fourth race. He scored by half a length, with the runner-up three lengths int; advance of the heavily played Cynwyd. from the J. Wormser barn. Lady Hockberger was fourth in the field of eight. Dreel won at the first asking for his new owner when he led a crack band of sprinters home in the sixth. He came from behind the pace on the turn and held on gamely in the stretch drive to beat Home Loan by a half length. Candy Maid, coupled with Candy Prince, was third.
