FURFIBER REWARDS BACKERS Vindicates Strong Support by Winning Rockingham Feature, Lost Friend Turns in Game Performance to Take Secondary Honors EI Bandido Takes Another. SALEM, N. H, Oct. 14. Mrs. W. R. Flcmmings Furfiber, handled in excellent fashion by Bernie Fels, won the mile Colonels Claiming Handicap, which featured the days sport at Rockingham Park. The winner, which ruled favorite, came to the front approaching the far turn and was going easily at the end to whip A. C. Bostwicks Lost Friend by two lengths. The latter made her charge on the outside at a loss of ground and was coming fastest of all at the end, but the Flemming racer had too long a lead to be caught. W. A. Jones Boston Brook finished third, a length and a half back of the runner-up and two lengths in advance of Rip Van Winkle. Bluebeard and L. B. Wilson were the only other starters. They finished as named. Bluebeard set the early pace, followed by L B. Wilson. Fels bided his time with the winner, rating him in third place until they began the run to the far turnN There he moved for the first time and met a ready response from his mount, taking the lead and drawing out around the turn. He came into the final lane well in advance of his field. Eoth Bluebeard and L. B. Wilson had quit by the time they reached the eighth post and Lost Friend was coming from the ruck on the extreme outside. She took second place a sixteenth out. but could not catch the winner. Boston Brook was well back in the early running and also closed stoutly in taking Continued on thirty-fourth page. FURFIBER REWARDS BACKERS Continued from first page. the show award. Rip Van Winkle did not begin to run until the final eighth. The distance was completed in 1:39 flat, fair time over this course. A fairly large crowd was on hand despite cold weather and ,a dismal afternoon. Mrs. W. Rosens Regula Baddun, with Joe Rosen in the saddle, drew, off in the final seventy yards to win the five and one-half furlongs event that opened the sport. The High Time gelding was a length clear of Childs and Walkers Shining Jewel as they, passed the judges. Mrs. C. Tumins .Dark War closed fast to whip the tiring Good Dame for third place. The latter and the winner set all the early pace. Good Dame was in front until they reached the stretch, but never was more than a half length in, advance of Regula Baddun. Good Dame hung on until reaching the sixteenth post, where she tired and three horses surged past her. O. L. Fosters Grimaldi scored a front-running victory in the five and one-half furlongs event that was second on the program, leading all the way and holding on well under urging from Kamar in the stretch. The juvenile son of Zacaweista finished a length in front of Mrs. Matt Colfords Royal Shoot. Ken Mings Joan Asbestos was third in the field of eight Grimaldis lead never was seriously menaced. ZEVANAID ALL THE WAY. Miss Anita Doris Zevanaid led all the way to win the third race on the program and completed a "Daily Double" that paid 09.60. Ridden by Kempton Knott, the winner swept to the front immediately and drew away in the final seventy yards to whip Bill Gallagheis Queen Vic by a length. Queen Vic was a head clear of O. L. Fosters Teeter Totter at the end. The latter was in trouble from the start and was probably the best horse in the race. Kamar was forced to take back with him on the far lane and he made three separate challenges, losing ground each time. He should do next out, with better luck. Queen Vic was in closest pursuit of the pace all the way, but was unable to get up and was tiring at the end. Allen Tiptons El Bandido scored, his second victory of the meeting when he opened a commanding lead in the first three-sixteenths of the five and one-half furlongs fifth and romped home a length and one-half in front of Miss Hambla Bauers recent surprise winner Loloma. Blackmail finished third, saving that portion of the purse by a neck from Gift of Roses. There, was never anything to the race except the winner, with the exception that Fair Time, which, after racing in second position, tired badly, to be overtaken by the two other placed horses and Gift of Roses. Toano ran a disappointing race, finishing last of the field of eleven. The time of 1:05 marked the fastest time for the distance during the meeting. Mrs. I. Romms Bright Bird was dropped into a real soft spot in the sixth and won by two and a half lengths as if outclassing the platers that opposed him. He took command at the sound of the bell and was at no time, during the running. In danger of losing his command. Teddy Carl moved up on the turn into the stretch but E. Porter, who was astride Bright Bird, merely let out a wrap and gave him one sting with the whip and he, from that point home, wae gradually drawing away from his field. Just Remember got up in the final stride to save the place by a nose from Oaktree Stables Lapland, a plater which is showing improvement with each performance. Bright Bird was the favorite for the race and ran the mile and a sixteenth in 1:48. . I . : . . ; i :
