Twenty Years of Future Books on KENTUCKY DERBY and the Results 1930 . , The spring of 1930 was one of uncertainty for future book players on the Kentucky Derby. The layers themselves were as befuddled concerning Derby form as the players, and they took the easiest way out let the players establish the future book choice, which required one month. The opening quotations listed five horses at 10 to 1, one at 12 to 1, another 20, and a few more at 30. On March 7 Gallant Fox, High. Foot, Flying Heels, Dedicate and Desert Light were each offered at 10 to 1. Two weeks later Ned O., which opened at 12, joined the others and was dropped to 10, making an even half-dozen horses sharing favoritism. April 1 saw the original five holding their own, but Ned O. went up five points to 15. April 14 saw the first definite break and High Foot became the choice at 8 to 1, Gallant Fox, Flying" Heels and Desert Light remaining at 10, and Broadway Limited, the 5,000 Waggoner beauty, being slashed from 60 to 20. By April 29, however, weight of public money had driven Gallant Fox into favoritism at 4 to 1, from which price he was slashed to 7 to 5 on May 13 and won the Derby at mutuel odds of .19 to .00. Tannery was the second choice on Derby eve and also in the mutuel betting. Three of the outstanding candidates, Flying Heels, Dedicate and Desert Light, failed to get to the post, and Crack Brigade, on which considerable late play developed, finished fifth, Gallant Knight running second, Ned O. third and Gone Away fourth. Tannery and Broadway Limited helped to make up the field, along with High Foot and some others, including that incongruously-named Alcibiades. That 1930 Derby attracted a brilliant field, and Gallant Fox later sired Omaha, the Derby winner of 1935. The following tabulation shows the order of finish of the 1930 Derby, opening future book quotations, fluctuations and mutuel prices against the starters: March March April April April May Finish of Derby 7 22 1 14 29 13 Starting Odds Odds Odds Odds Odds Odds Odds Gallant Fox 10 10 10 10 4 7-5 $ 1.19 to I Gallant Knight ... 30 40 40 40 ... .15 22.73 to 1 Ned O 12 10 15 15 ... 10 25.79 to 1 Gone Away... 20 20 20 20 ... 25 52.92 to 1 Crack Brigade 30 30 30 30 ... 6 16.62 to 1 Longus ......100 100 200 ... ... 60 U8.12 to 1 Uncle Luther ......100 60 100 ... ... 60 1 18-12 to 1 Tannery 60 40 60 20 ... 5 3.12 to 1 Broadway Limited.... 50 40 40 60 ... 40 150.43 to 1 Alcibiades 50 50 60 60 ... 1 18.12 to 1 Kllkerry 60 60 100 50 ... ...
