1 BOWIE TURF NOTES T s Henry Erickson, who will make the riding engagements for Eddie Smith, says the Washington youngster has signed with the John Hay Whitney stable. Eddie Matthews reports that his mare, Cantersine, dropped a filly foal by Crack Brigade. Jockey Tony Diliddo was an arrival from Hot Springs, Ark. Don Yates sold Toothpick at privateterms to Stephen Heth. Toothpick was moved from here to Beckers farm. Jockey Hubert LeBlanc was an arrival from New Orleans. He has given first call on his services to Johnny Logan. Alvin Untermyers Kentucky Derby candidate, Chaps and Torch Light, showed a nice three-quarters move from the gate on Tuesday. Trainer Hugh Dufford plans to run Chaps in a three-quarters race, prior to starting him in the ,500 Bowie Handicap on April 9, against older horses. The Silver Hill stable brought in five horses from Havre de Grace. J. B. Belk, of Charlottesville, Va,, reports the arrival of the following foals at his farm: Bay filly, by Sir Walter Bogey Way; chestnut filly, by Sir Walter Blondie, and twins by Sir Walter Madame Snob. One of the twins is a bay colt and the other a chestnut filly. Brother and sister are doing nicely, according to their owner. General manager Joseph B. Boyle of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Association, reports that superintendent Dick Pending has more than 1,500 requests for stalls. As a result, Pending will have to ask numerous horsemen to stable at Laurel and Pimlico and van here on the days they have anything to race. In addition to the Belair-Wheatley horses, which include Alps, Teufel and Wise Counsel, others that shipped here recently are Mrs. Willie Robinson, P. C. Randolph, R. A. Breton, A. R. Marshall, F. Waring, J. E. Murphy, E. Mulrenan, H. L. Banners, T. P. Morgan, H. G. Campbell, Mrs. V. Russell, J. M. Bachland, H. L. Stanton, R. C. Hanna, H. E. Yorke, C. H. Robinson and J. E. Hughes. Among the better known racing establishments with representatives on hand are the Millsdale Stable, John Hay Whitney, Ray Bryson, Alvin Untermyer, A. C. Compton, Ral Parr, Mrs. Emil Denemark, Shandon Farm, Bomar Stable, Howard Bruce, Elwood Sachsenmaier, Brandon Stable, William Zeigler, Jr., and Charles Fleischman. Racing secretary John B. Campbell, who opened his offices Monday, was well pleased with the horsemens generous response to the stakes to be run here. Campbell attracted sixteen nominations for the ,000 Kindergarten Stakes to be run Friday. The ,000 Rowe Memorial Handicap to be run the following day drew sixteen nominations. Twenty-seven horses have been named for the ,500 Bowie Handicap on April 9. The ,000 Southern Maryland Handicap on April 13 has attracted twenty-eight horses belonging to nineteen interests.
