I THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 DAUBER Chestnut colt, by Pennant Ship of War; owned by Fox-catcher Farms. Trained by Richard Handlen. By NORRIS ROYDEN -TTT....... ........... - . , -, . . , ; A colt with excellent possibilities and apparently well worth the 9,000 he cost in the C. V. Whitney dispersal sale last November is Dauber, now a member of the Foxcatcher Farms stable, maintained by William duPont and trained by Richard Handlen. Dauber did a lot of racing last season, and went postward three times during the winter, and while his record of victories is not particularly impressive, what he displayed in competition was suggestive enough of better things to come. Off his last race alone the son of Pennant and Ship of War, by Man o War, is worthy of considerable attention insofar as the Kentucky Derby, is concerned. Stagehand is a short-priced favorite in the Derby futures, yet he only defeated Dauber by half a length in the Santa Anita Derby, and the Foxcatcher colt was finishing the mile and a furlong race just as willingly. Maxwell Howards star gained most of his prominence by nipping Seabiscuit in the Santa Anita Handicap, and possibly Dauber could have been right there in that event had he competed. Dauber also finished behind Stagehand in a mile race over a slow track, at Santa Anita, a length and a half separating the two colts, with the Foxcatcher colt giving the latter four pounds. Stagehand came from behind to gain the victory, but Dauber also came out of the pack to finish with determination. In his other race at Santa Anita, a six-furlong dash, Dauber also came fast at the end, losing by a neck to Liberty Flight, while dead-heating with Boss Martin for the place. Most important of Daubers three victories in fifteen starts as a juvenile was in a dash of six furlongs at Belmont Park as he was making ready for the Futurity. He ran the distance in 1:10, coming from behind the pace, to defeat Bourbon King by hall a length as Specify was third and Dah He fourth. In the Futurity the son of Pennant again went steadily to the end to finish in fifth position, six lengths back of Menow as the latter set a worlds record of 1:15 for the six and one-half furlongs. Prior to the Futurity and after winning his first start over The Chief, then his stable-mate, Dauber placed third in the Great American, second in the Christiana Stakes, fourth in the Flash and Saratoga Specials and fifth in the Hopeful. He also won an overnight race in heavy going at Delaware Park, was third to Transmitter and Indian Lodge in an allowance affair at Belmont in the spring and, in the fall at Belmont, second to Specify, and fifth in the Champagne Stakes, won by Menow. Following the Futurity his distances were stretched out, yet he continued to meet with difficulty in running down the leaders in the stretch, coming from well back to place third in the Ardsley Handicap, at a mile and seventy yards. He was beaten a, length by Chaps, with Essjaytee second. Dauber completed his campaign with starts in the Walden Handicap and Pimlicd Futurity, both at a mile and one-sixteenth. In the former he finished sixth, but did better in the Futurity, as he took third honors five lengths back of Nedayr, Jacola separating them at the end. Then came his sale to duPont, who outbid the Millsdale Stable. One fact is greatly indicated by Daubers record and that is the ability to go a route Perhaps he has yet to find his best distance, which could be over the mile and one-quarter route of many of his more important engagements this season, such as the Kentucky Derby. There is also the suggestion that he has yet to reach the peak of his development, which may come in his present training or later in the season. That he is bred well enough for distance running is quite apparent, as Pennant has sired such capable routers as Equipoise, Bunting and Rolled Stocking, while Daubers dam, in addition to being a daughter of Man o War, is out of Waterblossom, which also produced Aquastella. Both Waterblossom and Aquastella won the Alabama Stakes, which, at a mile and a quarter, is one of the most important tests for three-year-old fillies in this country. f Domino.... i Himyar f Commando S Mannic Gray g LEmmaC Darebin P J Guenn ? r I A THermit Newminster L Cinderella J Seclusion .Mazurka. !
