THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 TIGER Brown Colt, by Bull Dog Starless Moment; owned by Milky Way Farm. Trained by R. S. McGarvey. By NORMS ROYDEN A-------- -.-j Among the more prominent candidates for three-year-old honors by virtue of a brilliant campaign as a juvenile and successful conquest of the Arkansas Derby is Tiger, but considerable doubt exists, which is shared by the writer, that the Milky Way Farm colt will prove formidable in the final decisions of the classic events. Hardly any youngster had more speed last season but the son of Bull Dog and Starless Moment, by North Star III., doesnt appear equipped to extend his foot over a distance of ground in high-class company. When he had completed his two-year-old campaign, Tiger had won six of his nine starts, including the Washington Park Futurity, and a dead-heat with Teddys Comet in the Arlington Futurity. In another effort he was second to Menow in the Belmont Futurity, his other two outings finding him out of the money. In the one he bore out badly because of an ailing tooth, and in the other, the Junior Champion Stakes, the Milky Way colt couldnt negotiate the Aqueduct going. Tiger made his debut at Churchill Downs May 1 by winning easily at four and one-half furlongs after swerving all over the course, defeating Teddys Comet among others. After running out in the Prairie State Stakes, Tiger was visited by a veterinarian and his tooth doctored. He then proceeded to run five furlongs in :59 and six furlongs in 1:11 for handy victories, the latter in the Washington Park Futurity, in which he defeated Menow by two lengths, with Bourbon King placing third. Given a brief vacation, the Bull Dog colt came back in the Arlington Futurity, in which he and Teddys Comet fought a ding-dong duel all the way over the six-furlong course, finishing a length before C-Note, as Bull Lea was fourth and Sky Larking farther away. He made a single appearance at Saratoga easily accounting for an overnight race in which he ran six furlongs in the comparatively good time of 1:11, to take the measure of Benjam, War Magic and the like. Tigers final stakes tune-up for the Futurity was in the Junior Champion, but the ground broke out from under him and his vaunted speed was missing to the extent that he finished far back as Cant Wait scored easily over Fighting Fox and Redbreast. He gained his first experience over Belmonts straight course in a dash of six furlongs, in which he conquered Pumpkin by four lengths as Great Union was third. Topweight of the Futurity field with 126 pounds and the favorite, Tiger went smartly all the way, but after being bothered slightly about the furlong pole, he could do no better than finish four lengths back of Menow, but the H. P. Headley colt had to establish a new worlds record of 1:15, for the six and one-half furlongs to defeat him by that margin. That race concluded Tigers two-year-old racing, as he suffered gravel in his foot and had to miss the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Taken to California to prepare for the Santa Anita Derby, the Milky Way star was unable to train properly due to continued presence of a muddy track and, after having shown good speed in the early stages under strong rating, something he didnt care for, he finished far back as Stagehand was victorious- In the Arkansas Derby, Tiger took up topweight of 126 pounds and led all the way over the mile and one furlong route, which was covered in 1:50, two-fifths off the track record, but he had very little left to defeat Silver Sarah by slightly more than a length after having enjoyed a good lead in mid-stretch. Tiger inherits much of his speed from the highly-successful Bull Dog, and he should get staying ability from his dam, the stoutly-bred Starless Moment but, although he has filled out and developed his chances of winning, such races like the Kentucky Derby are being discounted by many horsemen and experts.
