FAST WORKS AT KEENELAND Gov. Chandler Gallops Mile in 1:41 in Easy Fashion. Owner Joe Metz Refuses Tempting Offers for Colt Starts in Mereworth Purse. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 18 Gov. Chandler, Joe Metz, good son of Reigh Count, turned in an excellent trial over a fast track at Keeneland Park Sunday morning when he ran a mile in 1:41. Starting his task at the mile post, the Covingtori-owned Kentucky Derby candidate, which finished third in the Arkansas Derby, was clocked the quarter mile in :.2i, half mile in :50 and three-quarters in 1:16. He was well in hand throughout and cooled out in superb fashion. Metz has refused several tempting offers for the colt, which is expected to make his local debut in the Mereworth Purse Thursday. Heavy rains which fell last night left the track in a sloppy condition for todays works but Bally-O-Fire demonstrated he is capable of negotiating such a track when he stepped three-quarters in 1:16 after running the half mile in :46. DEPARTS FOR EAST. Bourbon King, which finished second to Lawrin in the Flamingo Stakes and which will entrain tomorrow for Havre de Grace, where on Saturday he will fill his engagement in the Chesapeake Stakes, breezed six furlongs in 1:18. .He was timed the quarter in :26 and the half mile in :52. Owner Hal Price Headley announced after the work that Raymond "Sonny" Workman has been engaged to ride the son of Whichone Ancient Queen.
