PRIZES OF 25,000 Arlington Park Offers Harvest of Gold for Horsemen. Classic to Be Run Saturday, July 23 Dates for Other Rich Turf Fixtures. The Arlington Classic will be run Saturday, July 23, and horsemen will glean a golden harvest of 25,000 from the stakes and purses to be offered during the thirty-day Arlington Park meeting, opening here June 27, according to the announcement Saturday by Charles A. McCulloch, chairman of the board of directors of the Arlington Park Jockey Club. With the mid-Wests leading race, track contributing 05,000 in added money, the eight stakes studding the meeting will gross approximately 80,000 through addition of nomination and starting fees. The purses, ranging upward from the minimum of ,000 will distribute another 45,000 to horsemen. Added money for the stakes shows an increase of ,500 over 1937. Novel highlight of the 1938 stake list is the inauguration of the 5,000 added Arlington Cup, a weight-for-age race at a mile and a quarter, which supplants the 0,000 added Arlington Handicap of last year. In this new stake the Arlington Park Jockey Club retains the right to declare it off ten days before its scheduled date of running, July 30, if the quality of the prospective starting field is not to the satisfaction of the Arlington officials. If the field does not shape up to the caliber of a 5,000 race, a handicap of less value will be substituted, with nominations for the latter closing a week before the race. STAKES CLOSING JUNE 1. Roy Carruthers, secretary and general manager of the Arlington Park Jockey Club, reports that 197 remained in the Futurity and 176 in the Lassie after the second payments. "The Futurity is expected to gross 0,000 and the Lassie. 0,000," declared Carruthers, who himself is a breeder of thoroughbreds in Kentucky. New and exciting history was written into the annals of the Futurity last year when Tiger and Teddys Comet raced to a dead heat. Theen, fleet filly owned by Warren Wright, master of Calumet Farm and vice-president of Arlington Park, won the 1937 renewal of the Lassie to become the champion two-year-old filly of the Middle West. CLASSIC STAKES. The 0,000 added Classic Stakes, attracting, as it does, the cream of the three-year-olds, is the most important midsummer race in America for that distance. Its winners list is studded with the names of thoroughbred idols of the day, including Blue Larkspur, Gallant Fox, Cavalcade, Omaha and Granville, champions of their years, and Mate and Gusto, which later raced in England. An important change has been made in the conditions of future Classics. After 1938 the race will become a "futurity" and Arlington officials hope that in time its gross value will reach 00,000, to be one of the richest stakes in America.
