STAGEHAND AND THE CHIEF Sandes Derby Pair Work Mile in 1:41 and Eased Up Mile and an Eighth in 1:55. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 23. Waiting until this afternoon when the high wind of this morning had diminished and over a track which was especially prepared, Maxwell Howards two Kentucky Derby hopes, Stagehand, the favorite, and The Chief, worked a mile in 1:41 and eased up a mile and an eighth in 1:55. They traveled abreast of each other all the way with Stagehand, handled by Jack Westrope, on the outside of The Chief, which was ridden by Harry Woods. Allowed to run easily for three-quarters, the two Ohio Derby candidates were mildly hand-ridden during the fourth quarter and here provided the most impressive phase of their trials by increasing their speed. After the usual short gallop to loosen their muscles, they started from the stand, where trainer Earl Sande was stationed. They were timed the opening furlong in :13, the quarter in :26, three furlongs in :39, half mile in :51, five-eighths in 1:04, three-quarters in 1:17 and seven-eighths in 1:29. The mile time was the fastest of the spring training season here, but it bettered only by one-fifth of a second that of Bert Friends Derby hope, Co-Sport, which worked earlier in the day when conditions were not as conducive to speed. The Sande-trained horses were virtually pulled up at the end of the Derby route of a mile and a quarter, for which they were timed in 2:11. Both of them came out of the drills unmarked.
