BAY MEADOWS CLOSES SPRING MEETING OF 1938 I i . . SAN MATEO, Calif., April 23 Bay Meadows closes its 1938 spring meeting this afternoon. The session, while it could not be rated highly successful, was satisfactory to the management and a reasonable profit was made by the California Jockey Club. The daily average pari-mutuel handle was expected to be in the neighborhood of 60,000 when this afternoons had been totaled. The total handle up to and including Friday was ,718,168. A chain of circumstances caused business at the Meadows to fall below expectations this spring. Cool, wet weather during the early part of the session, the fact that the season was staged during the Lenten season, the general depression and failure of horsemen to co-operate with the management and enter their horses during the first half of the meeting, al Jte.nded. to, .injure business..
