HEADL1NERS OF DERBY WEEK Crack Juveniles to Race in Debutante and Bashford Manor Stakes. Most Prominent Stables in Country Name Youngsters for Contests Costly Yearling Included. LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 31. Two of the brightest features to be renewed during Derby week at Churchill Downs are the Debutante Stakes and the Bashford Manor Stakes, each of them to be contested at five furlongs, and each of them to carry an added purse of ,500. The Debutante Stakes, as its name implies, is for two-year-old fillies and the Bashford Manor is for juvenile colts and geldings. The former is to headline the program May 3, and the Bashford Manor is down for decision two days later, or the day before the running of the Derby. Both stakes drew heavy nomination lists and among those made eligible for the Bashford Manor is the Milky Way Farms Rough Passage, one of the highest-priced yearlings of the 1938 sales. This son of Bull Dog-Wild Waters cost 1,500, and it naturally follows that the stable has high hopes for him. Victory in the Bashford Manor would be no new experience for the Milky Way establishment, which has seven youngsters nominated for this years renewal, for Murph won it in 1936 under that stables banner and the ill-fated Sky Larking won it the following year under the seme silks. For the Debutante Stakes, Milky Way has named four. COLORFUL RACES. Many of the most prominent stables in the country have made subscriptions to the Debutante and. Bashford Manor Stakes and their runnings are expected to add much to the color of racing during Derby week. Large fields usually try for top honors in these features and big ones are almost sure to answer the bugle for them this spring. Some of the prominent patrons who have eligibles for the two juvenile fixtures are, besides Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, A. B. Hancock, Warren Wright, W. E. Boeing, L. B. Mayer, Leo J. Marks, R. A Firestone, Daniel B. Midkiff, E. B. Shaffer, J. E. Widener, H. M. ; Woolf, Mrs. John Marsch, H. P. Headley, J. O. Keene, William duPont, Jr., W. F. Morgan, C. T. Fisher, R. A. and P. J. Nash, J. C. Milam, Thomas Piatt, E. F. Woodward, William E Smith, T. E. Mueller, James C. Stone. R. G. Martin, A. L Ferguson, A. C. Ernst, J H. Miles, Baylor O. Hickman, James W. Parrish, J. B. Respess and Conn Smythe. Many of the youngsters eligible for these stakes already are on the scene receiving their preparation for racing and the manner in which some of them are taking to their training" suggests the Churchill Downs spring meeting will uncover a number of likely racing prospects. DOLLY WHISK WINNER. Last year the Debutante Stakes was won by E. A. Carneys Dolly Whisk, which this season may try for victory in the Kentucky Oaks, while the Bashford Manor last year went to J. N. Camdens Royal Pam, which died a short time ago at Lexington. Both races are time-mellowed fixtures at the Downs, the Debutante to be run this season for the thirty-ninth time and the Bashford the thirty-eighth time. Besides these two races for juveniles and the Kentucky Derby, three other stakes to be run during the first seven days of the Downs meeting are the Clark Handicap, the Derby Trial and the Churchill Downs Handicap, rounding out one of the biggest weeks in racing the local track has ever known. In addition to these added money features, there will be a number of events for horses which fall just shy of stakes and handicap quality. Conditions for these events will be revealed when the first issue of the condition book is released the end of this week.
