ARLINGTON SIGNS R.S. SHELLEY Young Official Succeeding Charles J. McLennan as Secretary. McLennan Supplanting Bury as Racing Secretary at Suffolk Downs Washington Park Rumor Unconfirmed. Charles J. McLennan, one of the foremost racing officials in the country, has resigned as racing secretary at Arlington Park after serving in that capacity at the north side course since 1935. McLennan is relinquishing the position to act in a similar capacity at Bostons Suffolk Downs. His successor at Arlington Park will be Robert S. Shelley, another outstanding young official. Shelleys appointment was confirmed by officials of the Arlington Park Jockey Club Friday. Shelley also is racing secretary at Sportsmans Park, another of the Chicago tracks, Tropical Park in Florida, Narragan-sett Park in Rhode Island, Oriental Park in Cuba, and several Canadian courses. His father, William H. Shelley, has been racing secretary at all of the American Turf Associations tracks for many years. THREE-YEAR CONTRACT. At Suffolk Downs McLennan, supplants Eugene W. Bury, the Eastern Racing Association having signed McLennan for a period of three years shortly after the close of last years meeting at the Boston track. As dates for Suffolk Downs and Arlington Park conflict, McLennan was obliged to surrender the position at the local course. A report that McLennan may also resign as racing secretary at local Washington Park could not be confirmed here Friday. "If McLennan does not intend to return to Washington Park this year, it is news to me," said Ben F. Lindheimer, principal owner of the Homewood plant. McLennan has been employed by the Washington Park Jockey Club since the track has been owned by Lindheimer and other Chicago sportsmen.
