r . Here and There on the Turf Good Fillies Dodging Derby Sensibly Aim for Oaks Downs Event Well Patronized Inscoelda, Ciencia May Clash. 1 Ciencias victory in the Santa Anita Derby occurred at a time when an anxious racing public was awaiting announcement of the Kentucky Derby nominations and there was much speculation as to whether the King Ranch filly was named. William J. Hirsch, who saddled the daughter of Cohort and Science for her successful effort in the West Coasts 0,000 affair for three-year-olds, didnt know whether Ciencia had been entered in the Churchill Downs classic as that pi-rt of the stable management was directly handled by Robert J. Kleberg, and the King Ranch owner was somewhere on a railroad train. But soon the Kentucky Derby nominations were released and Ciencias name was not among them. Neither were the names of most of the other prominent fillies. In fact, only six members of the so-called lesser sex were entered in the Derby and of the sextet Inscoelda alone held claim to fame. The Derby list had not long been known when Ben Jones, the Woolford Farm trainer, announced th: t Inscoelda would not be prepared for the mile and one-quarter event scheduled for May 6, so odds probably can be obtained now for a wager smaller than the 00 starting fee that no filly will be a starter. Inscoelda appeared to have the best chance of making the grade because of the excellence of form she displayed last fall in winning the Walden Handicap over a smart field of juveniles including Volitaht, Ciencia and Impound. However, Herbert M. Woolf Continued on twenty-sevcrilh page.7 , HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page and trainer Jones thought better of the action in nominating Inscoelda, perhaps remembering what happened to so many other fillies which were prepared for such an exacting assignment so early in the season as well as being influenced by the development of Technician, and she will not be a starter. Absence of fillies from the Derby will not cause Americas most popular race to suffer the slightest bit, but at the same time it should strengthen the sport in their own division. So the Pimlico and Kentucky Oaks, the earliest spring attractions for three-year-old fillies, should enjoy increased popularity at their runnings next month. The Pimlico Oaks, with 0,000 added, is the first set for decision and will be run on the same afternoon as the Kentucky Derby, thereby giving owners a good reason for not naming their fillies for the Downs classic. The Kentucky Oaks, with half the value of its Maryland contemporary, in keeping with the current prosperity of Blue Grass racing, will be staged the following Saturday and undoubtedly will draw one or more members of the Pimlico field. An imposing group of three-year-old fillies is to be found in the Kentucky Oaks list. Sixty-eight members of the division were named, and Ciencia and Inscoelda are not the only principals, although they can be if they come up to the mile "and one furlong event in the same form they displayed in teir last outings. Inscoeldas, of course, was in the Walden, in which she wore down Volitant in the stretch with a strong rush. Ciencia, likewise, closed well in that mile and one-sixteenth engagement, but that effort is forgotten somewhat in the performance she displayed in capturing the Santa Anita -Derby, which she won off by herself over such capable colts as Xalapa Clown, Impound and Porters Mite. Perhaps the King Ranch miss improved over what she had shown In the Walden, but that does not mean Inscoelda cant do likewise. All of the other good filly prospects owned in the Middle West, with the possible exception of Big Hurry and Bass Wood, are entered in the Kentucky Oaks, and the field may not only be sizeable, but closely matched as well. With the exception of the Bradley pair and Sweet Nancy in the West, just about all of the more promising fillies are among the Kentucky Oaks eligibles. Dinner Date won the Spinaway and Matron Stakes, defeating So Rare and Grey Nurse in the former, and Ciencia and Airacuda in the latter. Only Grey Nurse of this group is missing. Another good Oaks prospect is Unerring, Lawrins sister, which was third back of her stablemate, Inscoelda, and Dinner Date in the Arlington Lassie Stakes. Unfortunately death had to remove one of the most promising of all candidates in Royal Pam.
