Eight three-year-olds, three of which are fillies, were named for the ,000 added Arkansas Derby, to be renewed for the third time as the feature of the Oaklawn Jockey Clubs closing day, tomorrow. It is one of the smallest fields in the brief history of the race, but probably is the classiest and boasts three eligibles for the Kentucky Derby. Fair weather yesterday and today, and a forecast for a continuance of the same, practically assures a fast track for the race. Ariel, best son of Eternal, will be represented by three sons and one of these will carry the top weight, and another will be the favorite. Sabariel, recently purchased by Herbert M. Woolf, who races under the nom de course of the Woolford Farm, from Waggoner brothers, will carry the top weight of 120 pounds over the one mile and a quarter. Radio j Gold is another son of Ariel, and he is not J without supporters. Excepting Caddiecay and Torch Stick, J which will carry 112 pounds each, and Hope M Diamond, which gets in under 115 pounds, the others will tote 117 pounds each. PROBABLE SECOND CHOICE. On Location, a son of Teddy, is the lone entry of the seven named by Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, and he probably will be the second choice. The 1938 renewal was won by Tiger, from this same establishment, and although On Locations best effort here was over a muddy track, it is believed he is capable of handling a fast racing strip. Although not a stakes winner as a two-year-old, Ariel Toy ran against the best of his age and his brilliant second to El Chico in the Hopeful Stakes placed him up with the leaders last year. Since arriving here in early January, Ariel Toy has gone through a long and careful prep and when Hugh W. Jackson, his owner and trainer, sent him out for the J. Martin Memorial, he justified his owners confidence by running a mile and seventy yards in 1:42, which was within one second of the track record. He made his own pp.oe and was pulled up near the end. ARIEL TOY PLANS. Ariel Toy is also a candidate for the Kentucky feature, and should he be victorious and go on to win the Chesapeake, his next engagement the Jackson three-year-old will be o9 of ths choices for the Churchill Downs Continued on thirty-fourth page. ARIEL TOY HEADS ENTRIES FOR THE ARKANSAS DERBY Continued from first page. Stakes. Sabariel and On Location also are eligible, and tomorrows race should determine whether they are of Kentucky Derby timber. Sabariel is unbeaten here, but both of his victories were over the short six furlongs of the Oaklawn Course and there are many who believe he does not favor a distance. However, he breezed a mile over a slow track in creditable time, and his backers point out that with the Woolford Farm luck n.ight enable him to chalk up another rich triumph for that Kansas City sportsman. Technician, from this stable, was made one of the choices for the Kentucky Derby after being victorious in the Flamingo, and Law-rin won both the Flamingo and the Kentucky Derby last year. On Location showed improvement in each 1 race here. After two seconds, one of which was ti Magic Key, a stablemate, over the 1 Oaklawn course, he came back to trim a I majority of the field that will oppose him tomorrow in the Eastman Hotel Handicap last Saturday. Since then, he breezed a mile in 1:46, over a slow track. RADIO GOLD LIKED. Of the others, Radio Gold probably will come in for the greatest support. He was second to Ariel Toy in the Martin Memorial and has trained splendidly for the race. Winner of four races before meeting defeat, last year, and successful over a good field at New Orleans this winter, Torch Stick is the best regarded of the fillies, although Hope Diamond was able to win a stakes last year. Torch Stick was second to On Location in the Eastman Hotel Handicap, and although a muddy track would greatly enhance her chances, she is equally at home on a dry one. Caddiecay left the maiden ranks at this meeting and Hope Diamond has shown nothing in her three starts here. Repeller tried Ariel T-y in the Martin Memorl 1 and was third in that race and also finished in the same position behind On Location and Torch Stick in the Eastman. In the draw for post positions, On Location received the pole, Ariel Toy number two and Sabariel number five. Radio Gold received the lucky "7" and Caddiecay will break from the outside. However, the horses will have a lng run to the turn and post positions should make little difference. Seven races, chief of which is the Au Re-voir Handicap, will support the Derby. It will serve as the sixth race, and post time for it will be about 5:15 p. m. central standard time.
