The famous 5,000 added Narragansett Special at a mile and three-sixteenths, which again heads the list of the seasons stakes, has been set for decision Saturday, September 12. The Narragansett Special, always a great horse race, has been won in previous years b: such outstanding thoroughbreds as Time Supply, Top Row, Rosemont, Calumet Dick, Stagehand, Challedon, Hash and War Relic. Last season, Whirlaway, generally acclaimed the horse of the year, was second to War Relic. The great Discovery was second in the 1935 and 1936 runnings, and Seabiscuit, worlds greatest money winner, was third in 1937. The 1942 renewal should again attract the brightest stars in the handicap division. Three 0,000 Races Three 0,000 added stakes are down for decision at the meeting. These are the New England Oaks, at a mile and a sixteenth, for three-year-old fillies on August 29; the James H. Connors Memorial Stakes, at six furlongs, for two-year-olds, on Labor Day, September 7, and the Governors Handicap, a a mile and an eighth, for three-year-olds and upward, September 26. The James H. onnors Memorial was formely run as the Old Colony Stakes and invariably attracted top flight fields. The name was changed last season to honor the memory of the former chairman of the board of directors. There will be five additional stakes, each with ,000 added. Mid-week stakes, which were abandoned at Narragansett during the past three years, are being revived to give horsemen a chance at higher purse earnings. Six of these events will be held on Wednesdays during the meeting, with a purse of ,500 added to each. This season the weights for the Narragansett Special will be announced ten days in advance of the race instead of five days hitherto.
