Sends His Twenty-Third Preakness Field Away Started Man o War on His Way To Victory in First Assignment BALTIMORE, Md., May 8.— Tomorrows field in the Preakness will be the twenty-third in succession sent on its way around the historic Pimlico track by starter James F. Milton. He looks upon the probable lineup as one of the easiest hes ever been called upon to handle. Milton had the honor of dispatching the peerless Man o War in his first assignment as the Preakness starter, and hes snapped the switch on many other good colts that won the race, as well as the filly Nellie Morse. He believes this years winner will rightfully belong in the same category as Challedon, War Admiral, Whirlaway, Head Play, Victorian, Display and the other Preakness victors. The veteran official has been a starter for more than 35 years, having his first assignment on a half-mile track in Columbus, Ga., after having served as assistant to such prominent starters of bygone days as Mars Cassidy, A. B. Dade, H. D. "Curley" Brown, Jake Holtman, Bill Murray and Fred Gerhardy. In addition to starting on all Maryland tracks, Milton has served in New York, Canada, Cuba, New England, and in 1910 he sent the Kentucky Derby field on its way.
