Joseph E. Widener Colors in Double Fair Weather and Martian Score for Noted Sportsman At Churchill Downs Course LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 8.— The colors of Joseph E. Widener, master of famous Elmendorff Farm, were carried to two popular victories before a large crowd at Churchill Downs this afternoon. After the four-year-old, Martian drove to a hard-earned victory in the six-furlong Las Vegas Purse, the speedy two-year-old Sickle filly Fair Weather romped to a onesided success in the Bosque Bonita Purse at five furlongs. Both horses were ridden by Eddie Wielander. Fair Weathers triumph was by far the more impressive, for she stepped the five furlongs in :593/5, three-fifths of a second off the track record, on a slightly dull track and won with six lengths to spare. She was in front all the way. Wiseasyou was alongside of her for about a quarter mile, but then the Widener miss drew away and won as she pleased. Fair Weather was bearing out the last eighth mile, but she continued to increase her advantage to the end. Wiseasyou Best of Others Although unable to keep pace with Fair Weather, Wiseasyou was easily best of the others. She took the place three lengths in advance of Timocracy, who turned in a more or less steady performance. Gino-merica was among the leaders for a time, but she could not improve her position after reaching the home stretch and was soundly beaten. Fair Weather was a big favorite with the crov/d, for she paid only .40 for in the mutuels. Martian also was held at odds-on, 4 to 5, but he had to stand a sharp drive to run down Nimble, who made all the pace. Martian was never far back, but until the leaders reached the last eighth it appeared that Nimble might stick it out. Here, however, she weakened just a trifle and the Widener gelding was able to wear her down to get the decision by a little less than a length. One Tip was a distant third, and Martians time for the three-quarters of a mile was 1:12%. The victories were the second of the meeting for both Fair Weather and Martian.
