- . Cottesmore Facile Victor In International "Chase Outjumps Rivals at Belmont Park —Hickory Head Wins Debut ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., May 12.— Cottesmore, hero of a memorable Belmont Grand National a couple seasons back, added another hedge special to his roster at the huge Westchester Racing Association park this afternoon when he scored a facile victory in the 45th edition of the ,000 added International Steeplechase Handicap. The seven-year-old Heverswood gelding who is owned, trained and ridden by George H. "Pete" Bostwick, romped to the end of this about two miles course across twelve high fences with four lengths margin showing before Rokeby Stables Redlands, the runner-up. Lapped on Redlands, Louis B. Mayers clever Ossabaw finished in third place the best part of a length before Invader. Eight accomplished steeplechasers, representing the classiest field assembled thus far in the 1942 season among this division, participated in the International, but it was virtually a four-horse contest among the quartet sharing the prize distribution all the way. Carries Top Weight of 157 Pounds Cottesmore earned ,300 by this latest tally, in which he carried top weight of 157 pounds, and returned those who made him the tote favorite .80 for . He was the best ridden horse in the field, and conceded from five pounds to Ossabaw, to 24 pounds to Elkridge. His time was 3:434£, three and four-fifths seconds behind the course record held jointly by Fairmount and Lon-dontown and about "par" for the stake. The Tuesday card attracted a gathering of 14,688, including the rather large chase and hunt set in the Metropolitan area and surpassed the 12,397 present the second day of the spring season in 1941 by a ponderable margin. The sport was vivid and keenly interesting throughout the matinee and notable for its general quality. Cottesmore, obviously in excellent condition, was allowed to lope along several lengths back as Redlands was indulged in the pace for a mile of the International. Near the end of the back field, Bostwick ! inaugurated his run, collared Redlands on the last bend and drew out over the final hedge to win with something in reserve. Several candidates for the Acorn, and one, Ficklebush, for the Coaching Club American Oaks, matched speed in the six furlongs of the Flitaway Purse, on the main track. She sped to the front at the drop of the flag, disposed of Cherrydale easily, then drew off to win by five in 1:11%. Horn, closing well to beat tired horses the final furlong, was second by a length and a half over Smiles. Zaca Rosa paid a fortunate few at the rate of 2.10 and was ridden by apprentice Wahler. Ficklebush, heroine of the Selima last and appeared a trifle high in flesh. Light Lady was outrun. Smiles finished well. The winner is in the Acorn. The Greentree Stables prepossessing Hickory Head, a half brother cf Devil Dive :, made his debut in the five furlongs of the Fides Purse or fourth race. He performed right to promises when he beat Wheatley Stables seasoned Best Irish a short head in a long drive.
