Cerberus Cerberus to to Fore Fore Again Again at at Churchill; Churchill; French French Horn Horn Lasts Lasts for for Narrow Narrow Victory Victory jNeedham Racer Never Headed In Third Consecutive Triumph Steve Brooks Completes Riding Triple on Detroit-Owned Gelding After Booting Home John Marschs Burgoolette And Bulldinger to Victory in First and Fourth Events LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 12.— The consistent little Cerberus, who races under the colors of Robert Needham of Detroit, added another triumph to his growing list when he won the mile River Road Purse at Churchill Downs this afternoon. The victory was his fifth in ten starts this year and his third in a row at Churchill Downs. The son of Coldstream or Bull Dog, carrying Steve Brooks to his third saddle success of the day, broke in front and stayed there, completing the mile in 1:37% and winning by a half length. Shortening took down second honors, with Cadmium finishing third, just a little more than a length back. Radio Joe, who ran fourth, and Tippity were the only other starters. Cerberus, who has not been out of the money this year, made the pace under a good job of rating and, approaching the far turn, drew away from his rivals. He still had a comfortable advantage with only a furlong to go, but Brooks had to ride him out through the last eighth to stall off the challenge of Shortening, who had been in hottest pursuit of the winner from the beginning. Cadmium trailed the field for the first half mile and then started after the leaders. He closed well enough, but he still could not reach Shortening. Radio Joe raced in third position for a little more than a half mile and then he weakened, while Tippity dropped out of the picture about the same stage of the race. The popularity of Cerberus victory is reflected in the mutuel return on his chances. He paid one to two. Thrilling Finish The chief supporting attraction was the Simpsonville Purse at six furlongs, and it produced one of the most thrilling finishes of the afternoon. Bulldinger got the decision by a head, as Little Kiss beat Litchfield a nose for the place. Bulldinger, owned by John Marsch and ridden by Arthur Craig, forced Little Kiss pace to the last eighth and then inched his way forward until he reached the front near the end. Little Kiss held on stubbornly, but she was not quite good enough to stall off the Marsch four-year-old. Litchfield, the favorite, closed well, but he bore in through the home stretch or else he might have been up in time to win. The mutuel return on the winner was a little more than 15 to 1. Bulldinger s victory completed a double for the Marsch stable, which sent Burgoolette out to win the opening event, a dash of five furlongs for maiden juvenile fillies. She won by six lengths to the delight of those who -made her the choice.
