I | - j , j ] ] Attention,Swing and Sway I 1 In Metropolitan Preps Former Goes Nine Furlongs in 1 :54; Latter Mile in 1 :39 3-5 ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., May 12.— Attention and Swing and Sway, two accom- I plished sons of the ill-fated Equipoise, and I the Peruvian route champion Meissen turned in important distance moves at Belmont Park today for Saturdays renewal of the 0,000 mile Metropolitan Handicap. The large colony of railbirds and dockers present for the mornings workout period were especially interested in the mile and a furlong move by Mrs. Parker Comings i lightwaisted Attention, because he is expected to be the starting top weight, under 126 pounds, in the week-end mile event and also because of his slashing second to Whirlaway in the Dixie. The Albany-owned four-year-old worked on the main track, stepping off the distance in :48, 1:14, 1:40V5 and 1:54, moving along with the proverbial "stone in hand" throughout. The mile and one-half racing strip, of course, was dry and fast. In all probability Attention will be public preference in the "Met." Swing and Sway, who performs in the interests of "the First Lady of the American Turf," Mrs. Payne Whitney, and who probably will be accompanied postward by Third Degree, showed the best speed of the trio of Metropolitan hopefuls. Meissen Training Smoothly Gaver sent him a mile in :49, 1:1345 and l:393/5 under a steadying wrap. i Swing and Sway has the seasoning of two essays during the recent Keeneland meeting, in the latest of which he finished » third, which was a creditable performance. Meissen failed to impress in his North J American debut in Miami, but he has trained smoothly for Preston Burch at the Nassau County course and is a Metropolitan possibility. The 17-hands equine giant was timed a mile in 1:4135, moving along well within himself and going the half in :4823 and the six furlongs in 1:1333. i Calumets Some Chance, hero of the Bel- I mont Futurity here last autumn, is train- ing smoothly for Ben Jones for a proposed + c return to competition during this meeting. The light chestnut son of Chance Play may accompany Sun Again postward in the is ; Withers and Belmont Stakes. He went well on the main track at the Westchester t a Racing Association grounds, going a half j in :4835 and five furlongs in 1:0233. | Another stakes prospect of promise to * work during the forenoon was Glen Rid- I 1 1 dies War Hazard, heroine of last sum- I b mers coveted Alabama. The long-winded daughter of Man o War made a pro- t nounced impression on all observers as she h moved a half in :482/5 and five-eighths in t l:012/5 under trainer Carters direction, obviously in preparation for the Top Flight n " Handicap. f b
