S. Paynes Homebred Defeats . Valdina Paul in Summer Handicap DETROIT, Mich., June 26.— Some Man, a four-year-old gelded son of Ladysman and Somersault, sporting the silks of his breeder-owner, W. S. Payne, and trained by Keene Daingerfield, Jr., scored an un- expected victory in the 0,000 Summer Handicap at the Detroit Fair Grounds today. Splendidly handled by diminutive Melvin Calvert, Some Man reached the finish of his one mile and a sixteenth trip a length and three-quarters before Mrs. H. P. Bonners Valdina Paul, who was a length in advance of Mrs. Earl H. Beezleys No Wrinkles, third. Thirteen started in the route test and Some Man, Tank outsider" in the speculation, rewarded his backers with an 5 straight tote" pay-off. Taking up 107 pounds, which was 13 pounds less than that shouldered by the topweighted By Conscript, Some Man completed his task over the fast strip in 1:44, which time was three-fifths of a second slower than the track record for the distance. In accounting for his first triumph of the 1943 season. Some Man earned ,500 through his winning per- formance. Col. Teddy Breaks From Outside Although Col. Teddy was forced to break from outside the stall gates, starter Bryan Steele sent his big field away in good alignment and Grasshopper II., from the favored Beezley entry, immediately took command. Samborombon also was a for-I ward factor during the early stages, but he dropped out of contention after flattering with good speed during the first half-1 mile. Grasshopper II. also was done early and the choice players had no further reason to cheer until No Wrinkles made his fine stretch bid. The latter was coupled with Grasshopper II. in the Beezley entry. Some Man left the stalls in seventh J position and Calvert took him in hand immediately while keeping his mount within striking distance of the leaders. ■ Approaching the stretch, Calvert sent the 5 victor to the front and then vigorously " kept after the Payne gelding to the finish | in order to withstand the belated challenge of Valdina~Paul, who came from well back. No Wrinkles worked his way up steadily ; and closed in determined style, but his late charge was not equal to gaining him major r honors, and he had to be content with 1 taking down the minor end of the purse by y Continued on Page Thirty-One Some Man Races to Ma jor Upset in Detroit Feature W. S. Paynes Homebred Defeats Valdina Paul in Summer Handicap Continued from Page One a head margin over Florizan Beau, who raced gamely throughout. A crowd of 15,000 turned out for the sport at the Motor City oval today and wagering moved along briskly throughout the entire program. Several well-supported thoroughbreds were successful in reaching the winners circle and added much to the active atmosphere which prevailed. Eugene, from the locally-owned stable of J. L. McKnight, scored an upset victory in the ,500 Hamilton Handicap, which matched six three -year-olds at six furlongs. Cleverly handled by Johnny Deer-ing, Eugene came fast in the stretch and downed Mrs. H. P. Bonners Careless by three-quarters of a length, while the latter saved the place award over Lt. T. D. Buhls Likeasnot by a head. Dixianas favored Amber Light, H. C. Hatchs Grandpal and W. W. Nay lor s Precipitous followed the placed horses to the wire in that order. The victor, a gelded son of Excite and Jane Logan, carried 108 pounds over the fast strip in 1:11% and paid 6.40 in the straight pool. Eugene gave a game performance to attain major honors and had not Careless been unfortunate soon after the start, the latter might have reversed the decision. The Bonner star stumbled soon after the break and, recovering under good handling on the part of Porter Roberts, raced stoutly enough thereafter to earn the place award. Amber Light, who was much used engaging Likeasnot to the final furlong, faltered near the finish, as did the Buhl colt. Diamond Dick, son of Rolls Royce and Dis Dame, sporting the silks of Mrs. George C. White, raced to a surprising triumph in the Mati Hari Handicap, five-furlong two-year-old feature. Smartly ridden by Jorge Alfonso, Diamond Dick held a neck advantage over Hirschstein and Wyatts Good Going at the wire and the latter was five lengths before Neville Dunns Fire Power, third. % Picking up an impost of 108 pounds, which was six pounds less than the favored Valdina Senora, and five pounds below the weight assigned Good Going, Diamond Dick raced the distance in :5835. Overlooked almost entirely in the speculation, the White colt rewarded his scattered followers a straight tote pay-off of 4.60. Good Going went to the front entering the stretch and held a length advantage at the eighth pole, but could not withstand the winning charge of Diamond Dick, who closed gamely to earn major honors. Fire Power, who led the nine horse field for three furlongs, lasted to save third. Valdina Senora, choice for the dash, suffered bad racing luck when the ground broke from beneath her at the start and she nearly fell, losing whatever chance she might have had.
