Lassie Stakes Renewal This Week-End Fleetest Juvenile Fillies to Compete Calumet Farm Holds Strong Hand for Rich Fixture — Large Field Is Expected HOMEWOOD, 111., June 26.— The 0,000 Arlington Lassie Stakes, the sparkling record of which is illuminated by such brilliant former stars of the two-year-old filly division as Top Flight, Mata Harl, Forever Yours, Blue Delight and others of similar fame, is shaping up for its fifteenth running next Saturday in its customary style with the likelihood of having in its field of starters some of the fleetest filly prospects to be shown this year. There were 13 in the Lassie field last year when Walmac Farms Fad led them home to take down 5,980 as the winners share of the richest juvenile filly race in America. It appears today that next Saturdays renewal will attract a field at least as large as last year, and perhaps even larger. Among the likely starters are Brook-meade Stables Dare Me, winner of the Rosedale stakes; Arthur B. Hancocks Whirlabout, who won the Debutante Stakes; Calumet Farms Miss Keeneland and Twilight Tear; Coldstream Stables undefeated Nap; Hyman Friedbergs Harriet Sue; Green tree Stables Music Hall; Hal Price Headleys Letmenow and Catch-menow; Allen T. Simmons Smart Lookin, J. D. Weils Creepin; Lazy F. Ranchs Cocopet, the latter a supplementary nominee for whom a ,000 entry fee was paid. The present value of the Lassie Is 8,020, with starters yet to pay 00, so the gross amount is expected to equal or exceed that of last year. Headley Has Four Eligibles There are any number of additional possibilities among the 92 fillies which are eligible for the Lassie. One of the speculative features involves the number of starters some of the larger stables will have. It will be recalled that Headley started four last year and came off with second and fourth monies. Headley has four eligibles again this year and may undertake the same feat again. Trainer Ben Jones appears.to hold a strong hand for the Lassie with five Calumet Farm eligibles. Warren Wrights stable has a good band of juvenile filly prospects this year. It would be nithing new for Calumet to attempt a grand slam such as Jones accomplished in saddling Sun Again, Soma Chance and Wishbone to run one-two-three in the rich Arlington Futurity in 1941. The Lassie Stakes brings the second week of the Arlington meeting at Washington Park to a climax which precedes the brilliant holiday and War Relief program on July 5 featured by the 0,000 Stars and Stripes Handicap in which Whirlaway and many other stars of the division are expected to start. The co-feature with the Lassie on the week-end card next Saturday will be the ,000 Glencoe Handicap in which a band of three-year-olds will compete at seven furlongs. Preceding these week-end events will be many high class overnight attractions each day and two other ,000 stakes, the Cinderella Handicap for fillies and mares on Wednesday and the Rolling Lawn Handicap on the grass course on Thursday.
