Alquest Will Concede Four Rivals Weight in Clark Handicap Today Broad Grin Shades Stir Up t In Mile Workout at Downs; Autocrat in Extended Move LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 28.— A productive charity week of the thoroughbred sport, sponsored by Keeneland and Churchill Downs, will be climaxed here by a Saturday card embellished with a running of the Clark Handicap. This ,000 added run of a mile and a sixteenth for three-year-olds and up was inaugurated as long back as in 1875, the year of the Derbys inception, and has lured a shifty field of five for the ensuing renewal. Top weight of the acceptances is A. C. Ernsts hardhitting Alquest, who has 116 pounds and concedes from 2 to 11 to each of his prospective rivals, nevertheless appears a top-heavy public preference off his victory in the Ben All last week-end H. P. Headleys Anticlimax is regarded by handicapper William Shelley as the one to beat," with an assignment of 114 pounds. Then follow C. U. Yaegers Para-sang, 108; Dr. C. N. Finchs veteran, Yar, with 106, and T. C. Melroses Restless, who has a dismissive 105. Alquest negotiated the defeat of two of this field in the Ben Ali, Anticlimax and Parasang. And he won that mile and a sixteenth in the fashion to encourage the thought he is capable of picking up three more pounds and repeating, though Anticlimax gets a pound off and Parasang two. | Anticlimax was beaten "handily" and Parasang was hull down. Anticlimax captured the 1943 Clark, by the way. The familiar Adams will ride Alquest, while Pierson again boots Anticlimax and Morrisey is aboard Parasang. It seemed probable today this Clark would be presented on a dry race track. Broad Grin to Seek Derby Trial Most of the local Derby candidates will have a days respite from strenuous training for the forthcoming mile and a quarter classic tomorrow. Work hours this morning were enlivened by long drills given Greentrees Stir Up and Broad Grin and A. A. Baronis Autocrat. The course was in good condition and the Derby favorite, Stir Up, was clocked a breezing mile in 1:4$%. His fractions were :5125 and 1:1823. Broad | | Grin was timed in :5025, 1:1625 and l:4345.i 1 He made a better impression on work-watchers than did the Flamingo-Wood victor, but trainer Gaver seemed satisfied and Stir Up worked minus blinkers. Broad Grin j j is to appear in Tuesdays mile ,000 added ! Derby Trial, if the going is fast. i Autocrat moved along at a somewhat | | brisker pace than either of the more highly regarded Greentree eligibles. He was timed ■ mile in :5025, 1:1623. 1:4225 and a mile and a furlong in 1:55, going handily throughout. Meanwhile, . the Derby status of Wood- vales Kaytee, who arrived here with the , I above trio, was clouded in some doubt. This obscure three-year-old was running a slight temperature for a couple of hours I | yesterday afternoon and now has missed i ! some training. Royce Martin and trainer : j George Strate were to confer late today on j Kaytees immediate future.
