Pukka Gin Hemorrhages; Skips Chesapeake, Derby BALTIMORE. Md.. April 28.— A hemorrhage of the nostril, sustained while engaging in a private trial this morning at Pimlico, eliminated Col. C. V. Whitneys Pukka Gin not only I from tomorrows 5,000 Chesapeake Stakes here, but will cause his absence from the Kentucky Derby starting field. He breezed three furlongs in :38 over a muddy track and bled profusely after pulling up. Trainer Andy Schuttinger announced that his charge could be considered "out" of the Derby. He could not account • for the incident. He stated that the | colt had not given any previous indication of being a "bleeder." The son of Firethorn will be given a good rest and will be shipped to Belmont Park as soon as possible. Hoodoo, also named by Whitney for the Chesapeake and brought here to form an entry for that stake with Pukka Gin. was also declared, due to suffering a slight temperature due principally to shipping.
