-♦ Splendid Response For Detroit Meet Numerous Features at Long Session to Attract Turfmen With Better Class of Horses DETROIT, Mich., April 28.— With early responses from horsemen all over the country assuring a substantial increase in the number of horses of class to race here during the regular annual meeting opening on Saturday, May 20, officials of the Detroit Racing Association are sanguine that for racing fans everywhere the season of 73 days will hold more interest than any rac- ing here since the sport was revived. Taking the initiative in seeking to interest more owners of better horses of all classifications, the Detroit Racing Association raised both values and the number of principal features to be run over a year ago, and this program of 57 events worth from ,000 to 5,000 has, even at this early date, won more outstanding performers. No less than 146 other events already programmed will be worth from ,000 to ,500 and no race will have a value under ,200. And the racing associations heavy outlay in purses will be augmented by substantial sums earmarked for distribution as special awards to trainers, jockeys and grooms. Two 5,000 Races The two richer events scheduled at this time are the 5,000 Governors Handicap, a sprint of six furlongs for three-year-olds and older horses, and the 5,000 Frontier Handicap, for racers of the same ages, but to be run at the more exacting distance of nine furlongs. Six programs will be headed by 0,000 events, while features worth ,500 will headline seven presentations, and eight races of ,000 value have been announced. This is one more than the seven ,000 races, conditions for which have been announced, and there will be 12 events worth ,500 and 15 with a value of ,000. The equine stars, their stable companions and other thoroughbreds to be campaigned at the local Fair Grounds are beginning to arrive, but the real influx will not come for about 10 days. By that time stables will be getting in from Kentucky, California, Maryland and other eastern points. A majority of the horses on the grounds came here from Oaklawn Park shortly after the close of racing at that Arkansas track. Some stables will come here direct from winter quarters, among them several establishments now at Cumberland Park, near Nashville.
