Record Eligibility Lists For Six Chicago Stakes Arlington-Washington Fixtures Show Big* Increase Over 1943 As the date — May 1 — for the final eligibility payments draws near, it is predicted that the six early closing stakes on the Arlington and Washington Park agenda will draw record lists. They are the Classic, American Derby. Arlington and Washington Park Futurities, the Lassie and Princess Pat. With some 177 horsemen throughout the country keeping their candidates in line for these events, last seasons high figures are being exceeded, almost twice the number in some instances. Current eligibles for the six stakes total 1,021 out of 1,400 original nominations made last November 1, as compared to 667 out of 896 in 1943. Aggregate gross values are expected to be around 00,000, almost 00,-000 in excess of 1943. The total of 426, including six supplementary entries, that came up for last seasons renewal of the stakes, will be greatly exceeded this season. The Arlington Park and Washington Park Jockey Clubs are discontinuing the acceptance of supplementary entries, because a majority of the owners and breeders who have patronized the early closing stakes in the past are opposed to the practice. The seasons ranking three-year-old summer fixtures — the Arlington Classic, on July 22, and the American Derby, on August 26 —are far ahead of 1943, with 102 and 101 eligibles, respectively, as compared to 91 and 88 at this time last year. The same holds true for the Arlington Futurity, on July 15, and the Washington Park Futurity, on September 2, which have 238 and 233 eligibles. The two-year-old fillies stakes — Arlington Lassie, on July 1, and Princess Pat, on August 5 — loom up strongly, with 175 and 172 still in the running. The Princess Pat is a new futurity feature this year.
