Alabama Outruns Rivals In Suffolk Downs Dash Costly Hooper Juvenile Drives Home Length Before Kewey Dee EAST BOSTON, Mass., June 29. F. W. Hoopers Alabama proved himself a definite threat for the forthcoming Myles Standish and Mayflower Stakes at Suffolk Downs when he won the featured fifth race today. Well ridden by Hubert Trent, who was handling his second victor of the matinee, Alabama defeated Mrs. W. W. Adams Kewey Dee by a length margin and the latter was four and a half lengths before Vincent Ciceros Four Queens at the end of the five furlongs dash. Only six two-year-olds started, Salubria Stables Belfonda ran fourth, Phillip Godfreys Tiger Miss was next, and Golden Shoe Farms Smooth Gallop was last. Alabama had to survive a claim of foul to attain major honors. Kewey Dees rider, Earl Gross, went before the stewards after the running and stated that the Hooper colt had bothered his mount near the three-furlong pole. After the stewards heard the report of the patrol judges, the original order of finish was made official. The Hooper colt, a gray son of Mahmoud and Galabelle, displayed high speed and was timed over the fast track in :59. In garnering his third straight purse, Alabama shouldered 120 pounds and handled that impost in clever fashion. A crowd of 9,311 patrons installed Alabama at 2 to 5 favorite. Tiger Miss was first to show in front leaving the stalls with Kewey Dee next and Alabama a close up and determined third. The latter assumed command before going a furlong and Kewey Dee was always his nearest rival. 4 After leaving the back-stretch Kewey Dee took up a bit sharply when Alabama came over but recovered quickly and held on gamely through the stretch.
