Canina Has Ten Foes in Fort Custer Meets Up With Hi Neighbor, Tattle Tale, Our Merrick and Sir Sprite at Detroit Course DETROIT, Mich., June 29. All Canina has to do tomorrow at the Fair Grounds to increase her earnings this year by ,750, that sum being the winners share of the ,000 valued Fort Custer Handicap, is to stand off 10 adversaries. In attempting to achieve this the Abraham Hirschberg representative will have to carry 121 pounds and at the same time cover a mile and one-sixteenth. This, of course, is "no picnic." Particularly so since such other three-year-olds will engage as Bomar Stables Hi Neighbor, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Winters Tatle Tale, Torrence C. Melroses Our Merrick and O. Frank Woodwards Sir Sprite, to mention a quartet possibly quite capable of giving Canina a tussle for honors. Hi Neighbor is imposted at 113 pounds. He came into prominence suddenly here last Saturday while driving to a surprise accounting of the ,500 Marie Guyon Handicap, also at a mile and one-sixteenth. Sir Sprite also distinguished himself on that occasion by being the runner-up, while Our Merricks performance detracted from the reputation he had been gathering unto himself. He had no excuses, really. He got "dead aim" on the leaders entering the stretch. In fact it appeared as though he were about to assume command but, strangely enough, he stopped for breath .at the crucial moment, and, of course, the others did not wait for him. Consequently, when he again got started it was too late. Caffarella Rides Our Merrick For tomorrows venture Our Merrick will "tote" 110 pounds and receive the guidance of Mike Caffarella. Sir Sprite, who finished so resolutely in the Marie Guyon, will be asked to carry but 100 pounds in this sortie, while Tattle Tale has been imposted with 112 pounds. Incidentally she will have the services of Porter Roberts. In her most recent essay Tattle Tale wore herself out trying to remain prominent. Of course it still is a moot question whether she could have beaten Our Merrick, Gallahue and Passion, who finished in front of her in the Statue of Liberty Handicap. Rounding out the well balanced field are Darby Dimout and Sacaton, weighted respectively at 107 and 100 pounds, and entered as the R. Brooks and J. A. Thompson entry; On the Double, 100, and Old Silk, 103, and who will perform jointly for the account of Daniel Lewis; Gallahue, 104; and, Sealane, 106 pounds. Racing secretary Charles F. Henry experienced some difficulty filling Fridays card. Entries closed quite late. But, when finally filled the events presented evenly matched contests with prospects for a few very interesting duels. Post time for the opener is 4:30 p. m.
