Late Thread Proves Best In Initial Detroit Dash McKnight Filly Vindicates Strong Backing in Defeating Drawaway DETROIT, Mich., June 29. There was nothing interestingly unusual about the running of the first two races today at the Fair Grounds. The opener furnished the opportunity for form players to get away to a good start, those in the gathering of approximately 9,000 partial to J. L. Mc-Knights Late Thread received even money for their acumen. But, in the second offering "chalk" players were not as fortunate. Happy Joan, practically a 3-2 hazard, was unable to overtake J. C. Ellis Zora J., and therefore had to be content with the runner-ups portion of the purse, four lengths back of the Ellis two-year-old. Incidentally, this was the initial triumph of. her career for the juvenile daughter of Appealing R. K. Girl. She assumed the dominant role shortly after the start was effected and was really never endangered after shaking off Isa Applaud through the opening run. At the finish of the five furlongs covered in 1:01 over a fast track the filly had four lengths to spare. A winning ticket on Zora J., was worth 4.10 and those who had her coupled with Late Thread received a Daily Double payoff of 1.80 for the usual investment. Late Thread accomplished her second success at this meeting by simply remaining within striking distance of the early pace-setting Drawaway and rangl alongside the latter rounding the far bend. Once in command she drew away to display two and one-half lengths margin at the end.
